Scotland
« on: July 24, 2019, 12:33:06 PM »
So I went to Scotland for a week with my wife while the kids were on summer camp. It was our first time. Did a road trip Edinburgh-Inverness-Applecross-Portree-Fort William-Inverary Highland Games-Glasgow-Edinburgh. We had a blast! Beautiful scenery, amazing people. We'll be back, probably for the NC 500.

I did notice a lot of Celtic symbols in juwels. Stuff resembling T&C. Was that an original design by Joolz?

Anyway, I'm wondering what will happen with Scottish independence now that Brexit is creeping closer and the UK has its own mini-Trump... Will be very interesting to follow.

Fantastic Place. Ive spent a week in Stirling and Wigtown. Thouroughly enjoyed a much slower pace and some fantastic history. I personally think Independence wont happen in my life time.  The Welsh and Cornwall both want likewise. For good or bad, England and Scotland are forever intertwined. I get that some dont want to be goverened by London, but you can say that for the North of England as well. I also  think the people of this island take it for granted sometimes. If we had good weather constantly no-one would need to go abroad. We have so much culture and history to delve into. Having said all that, I identify as English rather than British. Britain is just the name for four countries, five if you include the Isle of Mann
Hala (from the Anglo-Saxon word "halh", meaning nook or remote valley), until it was gifted by King Henry II to Welsh Prince David Owen and became known as Halas Owen

I'm Belgian, so not too aware of all the ins and outs of internal UK politics. I do have a great interest in all politics (I hold a master in Political Sciences). I did gather though that one of the main reasons for voting against independence in 2014 was the fear they would have to of through the whole process of joining the EU again. But now with Brexit, they are out anyway, so that might change things. Add Boris to the mix...

Glad you enjoyed our beautiful country.  Really enjoyed my last visit to Fort William  ( Anna and Keren's wedding) . The T&C design is certainly celtic , I always thought it was more Irish but I might be wrong.  Pretty sure it's from the book of kells.  As for independence , it's difficult to say for sure , there is a definite anti Johnston feeling n if brexit goes badly wrong it's only going to get stronger.

As a UK resident, I feel quite embarrassed that I haven't investigated Scotland more... Only been there twice, once with my family when I was a kid (Ayr, I think) and once in Glasgow a few years back when I went to see Depeche Mode...  :-[

We loved Applecross and the roads to and from. We hated the puncture on the road to Bealach na Bà without a spare. Took us 3 hours being towed away. The garages make big money of tourist busting their tires on the potholes. We were his 6th of the day. Half his business in summer is tires of tourists.

Isle of Skye and The Quiraing was amazing.

Highland games at Inveraray castle was fun!

Glasgow... didn't like it very much.

Edinburgh is a blast. Found a nice record shop, Unknown Pleasures. They had some NMA vinyl I wanted but couldn't take with me.

We are thinking of goign back next year for the NC 500 or the Penis 287!

re T&C artwork - i remember Joolz years-back talking about The Book Of Kells in an interview.  there was also a book by George Bain that i dug up because i wanted to try designing my own....

FWIW, the car park here is where i first started learning how to drive - Drum Castle, outside Aberdeen in Scotland:

it was just an everyday thing - a castle...!
bah.  humbug.
