We all have our 'guilty pleasures when it comes to certain songs What do you consider to be yours. Am gonna give 1 of mine and see where the thread goes.
Pale Shelter - Tears for Fears (or most of the Hurting lp to be honest)
-
Not sure there has to be a right answer to this one. Who cares if someone likes Justin Bieber, or Cliff Richard, etc, No victim, no crime.
I gave up years ago caring what other people thought of my preferences, whether things were "cool" enough, or indeed, alternative enough.
That said, in the spirit of which the question has been asked, on my Alternative, Rock, Grunge, New Wave, Indie, Brit Pop, Prog Rock, Punk filled Pod, ,, the one that looks most out of place is --
The Carpenters. Ah, the voice of an Angel, with easy pleasant melodies
-
IMO, if it gives you pleasure, you shouldn't feel guilty about it... although that excuse might not stand up in court... ;)
Agreed with you Shush, long since stopped giving a **** about how my musical opinions are viewed in the eyes of other people... but if we're going to go through this thing, then I give you Bryan Adams.
Yes, the man has given us a cavalcade of shit for the best part of a quarter-century, but there is a trio of albums (Cuts Like A Knife / Reckless / Into The Fire) from the 80's that I loved as a much younger fella and still have much residual affection for... they remind me of simpler days when I had so much more optimism than I do now. If they came out today, I probably wouldn't like them, but when I get all gloomy about stuff, I might well stick one of them on for a nostalgic pick-me-up... in fact, sod it, gonna stick ITF on right now!
BTW, Shush, good call about The Carpenters... when you think about how bad things were for Karen Carpenter and you listen to something like 'Goodbye To Love', you realise what a heartbreaking voice she has...
:'(
-
Well some people among the "scene" might think these bands/artists are/should be something to be worried or ashamed about
softies:
Classix Nouveaux
Echo & The Bunnymen
Grace Jones
George Clinton
Weather Report
Mahavishnu Orchestra
New York Gong
Jah Wobble
I've been even caught singing in karaoke Simple Minds "Don`t You Ever Forget Me" couple of times which nearly scared my crusty old goth friends away at the weddings! (Another fave btw is Dave Vanian`s voice that fits best to my low mumbling voice and I've sang Damned`s "Alone Again or" - but that`s another story...)
-
Away from my usual alternative / hard rock faces, then the one album I have had since my teenage years, is ……..Hounds of Love by Kate Bush, I just like it and like her voice ::)
-
Rusco, I saw ECHO ATB supporting JAMES about two years ago... now, I like James but EATB were fantastic...
Also quite like early SIMPLE MINDS... much better than the later stuff...
-
gene loves jezebel
cocteau twins
alien sex fiend
just bands that i am the only one that was in to
-
Oh you bunch of light-weights!
I love Robbie Williams "Feel".
There, I've said it.

Ok, let´s confess it now folks: we the flower team! ;D
Big hugs to all ya! :-*
-
Josh Groban
Kelly Clarkson
Pat Benatar
I'll understand if none of you ever want to speak to me again. ;D
-
Blue Monday - New Order
Fade to Grey - Visage
-
At times I like to listen some old golden hits from 60`s. Mainly Laila Kinnunen (https://www.google.fi/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=9&cad=rja&sqi=2&ved=0CF0QtwIwCA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DQCh4XYzMj-I&ei=L5cQU8LSNIeN4gSelYGoBg&usg=AFQjCNFx3cKdwy3teyAmBibG_le4-ovdlg&bvm=bv.62286460,d.bGE) who was a Finnish legendary artist. Also some new accordion folk music; Accordion Tribe (https://www.google.fi/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&ved=0CDYQtwIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DNcX-pfiNCtg&ei=fpcQU4HdB_Pa4QT76oCICg&usg=AFQjCNEWYC2qEGHp11GFG2pTXuYpnQT4Rw&bvm=bv.62286460,d.bGE) and Ottopasuuna (https://www.google.fi/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CC4QtwIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DgQBE73x8Jds&ei=tJcQU8SEKanD4gT7iYCgCg&usg=AFQjCNF1tUBrQ3WGfyjmOvVqrOqUBR6mxw&bvm=bv.62286460,d.bGE). But I`d guess there are quite many among here whose inspirations lay near to the folk scene, as there are some influences about it in NMA too.
Accordion Tribe`s quite refreshing thing among accordion music in a way there`s 6 accordionists playing at the same time. That`s something which is unprecedented with the instrument. Common tradition is that there are only one accordionist among other players and instruments.
Ottopasuuna was a folk group before Kimmo Pohjonen became a well known worldwide star. In the link above, he is on the left with a bandaneon in his hands.

Like most of you I don't give a monkeys anymore about what my music says to other people and so.....
The Sugababes Greatest hits - some brilliant disposable pop.
So there :P
-
some brilliant disposable pop.
So there :P
Exactly !! we all like a bit of disposable pop now and again, its just that when we were younger and cooler, we would never dare to admitted it. ;D
-
when we were younger and cooler, we would never dare to admitted it. ;D
Been too long for me to remember those times................... I thought they told me I would lose my short term memory :o

When you reach middle age, there are three things you can expect to loose.
The first thing is your memory.
Can't remember what the other two are :o
-
Sorry, Shush, have we spoken before... ;D
IMO, 'pop' music is an expression that has been degraded by too many studio executives throwing any old crap at gullible kids with too much pocket money... it means POPULAR and I don't mean something that will be forgotten in six months time, like so many acts are nowadays... I mean something that will still sound great on the radio (or your own stereo) in 10, 20, 30 years time...
My first love will always be the kind of rock / alternative / 'indie' (whatever the **** that means, many of the so-called indie bands were funded by major labels, but that's another discussion) music that I post about... but I can also think of songs by the likes of Sugababes, Robbie Williams, (those last two mentioned in previous posts), Duran Duran, ABBA, FGTH, The Stylistics, The Bee Gees, not to mention so much classic Motown stuff, that I like, whether through nostalgic memories or a genuine appreciation of the songwriting... it's far harder to write a 'classic' pop song than some tuneless, fuzzy-guitar crap that will be trendy for five minutes... yes, early 90's grunge era, I'm looking at you... no, not you, Nirvana, you had some fine tunes...
Just my humble opinion, anyway...
-
i feel no guilt about loving nirvana
-
Me neither mate, one of the best bands ever ;) ;) ;)
-
Me neither, Heno and Shush, I was just saying how I hate the fact that they're lumped in with other bands from that same scene and era who were just utter cockbobbins... >:(
-
yeah well, just be more careful about what makes you feel guilty....k?
-
Used to be into Mud Honey at around the same time, and even saw them live, but they seemed to disappear. Whether Nirvana were the first, or what ever of the early 90s grunge scene, they are certainly the most memorable
-
i never got any of the other bands in the grunge scene
just nirvana
went to seattle for the first time in 1989 and got a taste for it all. kurt was stunning. almost untouchable. seriously. such a sad sad end. messed up.
-
Very jealous !!!
to my eternal shame, Nirvana played Rock City in Nottingham, 1991 before I was into them, I did not go.
Barty here did though, with his brother.
Now its a bit like hearing people 20 years older than myself telling me that they saw HendriX.
Ah well, at least I saw NMA a few times ;)
-
yeah well, just be more careful about what makes you feel guilty....k?
Um, not being funny Heno mate, but specifically saying 'not you Nirvana, you had some fine tunes' indicates that I WASN'T lumping Nirvana in with the other bands I was talking about... k?
-
now wherea is that sarcasm emoticon?
::)
-
Now now chaps, we have had a good night, a few drinks, now lets wipe our mouths, and move onto the next pub :D
-
pistols at dawn
-
Heno mi ode, I am happy to listen to the Pistols any time of the day..
-
pistols at dawn
Heno, I don't own a pistol. Will a handbag do? I can borrow one off my mum.
;)
Sorry if my post sounded a bit aggressive.
-
ok. handbags then. but you need to know that me Ma usually has a brick in hers
-
Handbags ? Bunch of pussies.....
I'll put an arrow thru' yer jap's eye at 50m!!!!!!!!! (And I mean that)
It's Sunday right? We should all be feeling confessional......
I fell in love with The Smiths when I heard What Difference Does It Make? Coming out of Laser 558 (pirate radio) in '84 while I was doing my homework. But....... This is brilliant: You muso peeps will hate me for this but I don't care :D

To be honest, this is pretty much the only song of hers that I have the vaguest memory of, I couldn't name another one.. listening back to it for the first time since the 90's, I still think it's a decent enough rock tune and certainly heavier / more alternative than some of the bands that grace the covers of the comic that KERRANG has turned into nowadays...
I also remember her on the likes of BUZZCOCKS a couple of times and she seemed like a decent enough sort... so in the absence of anything better from the other four screeching, over-moneyed harpies, I suppose she is... is that a bad thing?
:-\

I'll never claim to be a fan of Mr Williams, but he does come up with the odd pop music classic. Plus, I saw him on a talk show a few weeks back and he was a pretty funny guy...
True story. At a place I used to work at, some years back, we had a female security guard who did the odd foreigner at big music events... she did a RW gig and met the guy. For all his cocky, arrogant public persona, he turned out to be a really nice, friendly bloke.

Oh, Heno, mate, don't make me bring out the big guns here... I got a whole load of musical cheese imprinted on my memory... it might be awful but it reminds me of much happier times...
;D
-
There was a thread in one other musical forum where people listed 20 music videos in a chronological order how they got into the band and that type of music. I did too but realized it couldn't never make a brief picture enough about your musical influences. Twenty is just too little amount.
When I think about my past, I can first see a little child going nuts about everything which was rock. Then there was a long dedication to hard rock -> heavy metal -> speed metal -> thrash metal -> death metal -> grindcore, until found the long lasting punk thing which changed it all. From punk & hc I engaged at times to industrial, experimental, noise, jazz, dub and ethno things. All that looks so clear, but I see it still makes some people confused about the scale.
That's life. (A ridiculous) metaphor would be: you could not live only inside the same walls your whole life. You want to see the world and peek a bit over the fence to all directions. Then you understand what you're talking bout and do not take things too seriously. ;)
Often it goes so that things you like extend wider, but nothing is thrown away. Even later on it's possible to explain why something made an affection ages ago although it wouldn't anymore be a huge thing in your life nowadays. With music, there's a good way with the internet to return to something in nostalgy, but I've seen that doing it one or two times in 5 years is maybe enough.

Anastasia has a damn fine voice... not a huge fan or her stuff, but if she put fronted a proper rock act, I think we'd have a really good band, right there... ;)

Wishful thinking - China Crisis
What can I say, it reminds me of the 80s.
Not saying the 80s were good -- feel JS is on a mission to remind us that they weren't
But, if you were a teen "back then", then which ever decade "back then" has fond memories. You are really being sentiment for being young and innocent, whichever decade it was.

This, so much. As an 80's teenager, I didn't get into 'proper' music ??? until the very late 80's and 90's. Doesn't mean I don't have an awful lot of fondness for tunes that, if I heard them for the first time today, I might not like.
So, if we're still posting things, I do love this tune, Laura Branighan 'Self Control', shame she died so young.

Neil Young, Harvest moon. It;s not very punk or alternative, but it's nice, just nice. When me and my good lady have a session watching music vids on youtube, its a wonderful easy song to finish on. I like the simple easy video also, I gather the people in the audience are friends and family. -- again, nice !
Aaand also,, in the same scenario, Johnny Cash, Hurt. Amazing song, amazing video. Both full of pure emotion. I seem to remember hearing the sad irony that his wife in the video actually died before him, even though this was his final sign-off. I suppose some couples are just fated to always be together
