Not sure there has to be a right answer to this one. Who cares if someone likes Justin Bieber, or Cliff Richard, etc, No victim, no crime.

I gave up years ago caring what other people thought of my preferences, whether things were "cool" enough, or indeed, alternative enough.

That said, in the spirit of which the question has been asked, on my Alternative, Rock, Grunge, New Wave, Indie, Brit Pop, Prog Rock, Punk filled Pod, ,, the one that looks most out of place is --

The Carpenters. Ah, the voice of an Angel, with easy pleasant melodies

IMO, if it gives you pleasure, you shouldn't feel guilty about it... although that excuse might not stand up in court...  ;)

Agreed with you Shush, long since stopped giving a **** about how my musical opinions are viewed in the eyes of other people... but if we're going to go through this thing, then I give you Bryan Adams.

Yes, the man has given us a cavalcade of shit for the best part of a quarter-century, but there is a trio of albums (Cuts Like A Knife / Reckless / Into The Fire) from the 80's that I loved as a much younger fella and still have much residual affection for... they remind me of simpler days when I had so much more optimism than I do now.  If they came out today, I probably wouldn't like them, but when I get all gloomy about stuff, I might well stick one of them on for a nostalgic pick-me-up... in fact, sod it, gonna stick ITF on right now!

BTW, Shush, good call about The Carpenters... when you think about how bad things were for Karen Carpenter and you listen to something like 'Goodbye To Love', you realise what a heartbreaking voice she has...

Well some people among the "scene" might think these bands/artists are/should be something to be worried or ashamed about

softies:

Classix Nouveaux
Echo & The Bunnymen
Grace Jones
George Clinton
Weather Report
Mahavishnu Orchestra
New York Gong
Jah Wobble

I've been even caught singing in karaoke Simple Minds "Don`t You Ever Forget Me" couple of times which nearly scared my crusty old goth friends away at the weddings! (Another fave btw is Dave Vanian`s voice that fits best to my low mumbling voice and I've sang Damned`s "Alone Again or" - but that`s another story...)

Away from my usual alternative / hard rock faces, then the one album I have had since my teenage years, is ……..Hounds of Love by Kate Bush, I just like it and like her voice ::)

Rusco, I saw ECHO ATB supporting JAMES about two years ago... now, I like James but EATB were fantastic...

Also quite like early SIMPLE MINDS... much better than the later stuff...

At times I like to listen some old golden hits from 60`s. Mainly Laila Kinnunen who was a Finnish legendary artist. Also some new accordion folk music; Accordion Tribe and Ottopasuuna. But I`d guess there are quite many among here whose inspirations lay near to the folk scene, as there are some influences about it in NMA too.

Accordion Tribe`s quite refreshing thing among accordion music in a way there`s 6 accordionists playing at the same time. That`s something which is unprecedented with the instrument. Common tradition is that there are only one accordionist among other players and instruments.

Ottopasuuna was a folk group before Kimmo Pohjonen became a well known worldwide star. In the link above, he is on the left with a bandaneon in his hands.

Exactly !! we all like a bit of disposable pop now and again, its just that when we were younger and cooler, we would never dare to admitted it.  ;D
