So, our favourite performer is male, but,,
Been playing music by some nice ladies quite a lot recently. Some which I particularly like and admire for their song writing, and great singing voice --
Kate Bush
Amy Winehouse
Siouxsie Sioux
Chrissie Hynde
Bjork
Anyone else I should be listening to ??
-
Just thought about that and realised there are very few female singers I like lots of stuff by. Kate Bush is good but after that I struggle. I dunno if thats cos the genre that was given to me is male dominated. I tend to listen to the odd single and then any urge to go further stops.
-
Check out Louise Distras and Ellen Cox, both have supported NMA in recent years, very different to each other but both excellent young female vocalists

-
P.J. Harvey
Amanda Palmer (The Dresden Dolls)
Laura Marling (sort of indie/folk artist)
Tori Amos
Feist (Broken Social Scene and solo artists)
Alela Diane
Neko Case
Female fronted bands
the Distillers
Pretty Girls make Graves
Dark, Dark,Dark
Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs
Of course I somehow doubt many people will like some of these as the gravitate toward 2000's indie rock/pop.
-
Need to have a bit of think about this one of the ones mentioned so far Siouxie n Brody Dall Definitely
Ive always loved Shirley Manson ( ok i think she is beautiful lol) but she definitely has a great voice and has a brilliant stage presence
Amy Lee deserves a huge mention again stunning beautiful but what a singer
-
I used to like Edie Brickell back in the day. Not sure what she's doing these days. Also, I think some of Toyah's music was very interesting. On a more raucous, heavy rock theme, Girlschool's first few albums were great fun ! Also think the singer out of Within Temptation has a great voice.
-
Actually been pondering this today and remembered a band a German friend of mine told me about, Wir Sind Helden. Love the singers voice, Judith Holofernes, I think it is. Some cracking tunes too.

I never used to like Amy but, somehow, got into her stuff and now I think she's great. Such a damn waste of talent. Bjork... sorry, IMO she sounds like a pretentious catawailing cat. Never got into SS, sorry. But I do like a lot of tunes by Kate and I must investigate further...
Chrissie Hynde, though, is my favourite female vocalist ever. She might have the range of certain singers that are considered classic vocalists, but there's so much heart and emotion there... The Pretenders, fantastic band.
I'm gonna add Dusty Springfield to this list. My Mum was a fan so I grew up listeneing to her stuff...
And, now I'm thinking about tunes I grew up listening to, I'm thinking about classic Motown... excuse me a moment... ;)
-
Undoubtedly Dusty and the Mo Town legends are great singers, but did they write their material ? . Not trying to put rules in this topic, but I think we all have more respect singers who write their songs.
Like Kate Bush, the first female artist to get to U.K. number 1 with a song written by herself.
-
Song writers - Kate Bush , Dusty, Hynde - semms, we have more singers than writers
Female singers - I have to add all the great folk voices a Sandie Danny or Maggy Prior or Jaquie McShee - I`m a fan of Pentangle, Fairport Convention and others of the folk scene or related bands of the old days
-
Shush, I mis-read your original post... you're right, we should be talking about women singers who wrote their own songs and, much as I like the Motown girls, they didn't write their own stuff...
Still love Ms Hynde and I must get hold of her first solo album one of these days...
-
Pat Benetar. Blast from the past but thought she was a great singer. This is gonna be one of those threads where the more I think about it, the more itll come back to me. Pretty keen on Stevie Nicks's voice too

Damn, I was well into Pat Benetar during my teenage years... totally cheesy song coming up... ;D

I'd have put money on it in that if we could transport ourselves back to the 80's and take the forum with us, there would have been a lynching for even saying the name Pat Benetar. Funny how as you get older, you become more understanding of things. Still hate most of the 80's though. ;D
-
M/Ray
Yeah, don't get me wrong, lets face it, most people who buy music couldn't give a flying **** who wrote it if it makes you want a jig or sing along, but I think a performer is a true artist if they wrote it, or had a hand in writing it,
Yes, Mrs Hynde, what a voice. Even if she was doing cover version pop songs, they would sound good.

I agree about what has been said about Kate Bush and Chrissie Hynde, they are great voices...i remember Justin saying that he is a huge fan of Kate Bush.
"Runningup that hill" is an awesome song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wp43OdtAAkM
I quite like some songs of Sheryl Crow too...:

Others fun hits of the female singer/song writers of the 80's...
Laura Branigan's "Self control":

Lita Ford...:

Yes, I agree, Sheryl Crow, good singer/song writer. Not got any of her stuff, but all I have heard is quite good.
Yes, I have heard JS in interviews, or read somewhere that he likes Kate Bush. I have to say, I did wonder if to any extend "Summer Moors" was a follow up or sequel to her "Wuthering Heights" ??

I own a few cds and live dvds of Sheryl Crow and there are some pretty good songs ("Home", "Redemption day", "My favourite mistake", "Everyday is a winding road", "If it makes you happy", "Run baby run"...), i quite like her self-titled album from 1996.
I also remember an interview of JS during the release of "Between dog and wolf" saying that he has just read Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" and thinking it was absolutely wonderful, so "Summer moors" is surely under the influence of "Wuthering Heights".
-
For sure is it influenced by the book, I was just wondering if to any extent it is influenced by Kate Bush's song of the same title also based on the book, with JS being a Kate Bush fan.
If the band arrange a Q/A session again, perhaps I'll ask ;)
-
Guillaume, I was also a fan of Laura Branigan back as a young boy, bit of a teenage crush going on there, and I think Self Control is a cracker of a tune... I was genuinely saddened by news of her death a few years back...
OK, Alanis Morrissette... yeah, she had that one huge album (which I wasn't all that fond of) but that was 15 years ago... she's done some pretty good tunes since...
:o
-
Alanis Morrissette, that's another artist who's stuff I have heard I have liked, but never got any of her material.
-
Gotta agree with Alanis Morrissette and Sheryl Crow. Did have a couple of albums by both but long since gone. Sheryl Crows cover of First Cut is brilliant and Thank You by Morrissette is a song I never get tired of.
-
Apart from the ones mentioned already I totally adore Natalie Merchant (ex 10.000 Maniacs singer).
And the Cowboy Junkies are a female-fronted band that I like a lot. 'The Trinity Sessions' is a classic album
-
Uninvited, by Miss Morisette... brilliant...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvgi7P97lu0&feature=kp
And Thank U is such a good song as well...

Agreeing with the support for Tori Amos - she's been one of my favourite artists for almost 20 years, and seeing her live is quite the experience... she's a mad one, but all the best ones are, if you ask me!
Also really like Ane Brun. Her stuff is a bit darker and more guitar-based, but she has a haunting voice and a real way with words.
I'll stick my neck out here and suggest the Australian singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke. She's possibly a bit more towards the mainstream (well, she's had a couple of Aussie number 1 singles) but she's one of my absolute favourite artists (I walked down the aisle at my wedding to her song Space They Cannot Touch).
Here's one of my favourite Kate Miller-Heidke tracks, "The Devil Wears a Suit": http://youtu.be/q3FVQynT3pU
-
I have to admit upfront that I don't have or listen to a lot of female singers. That being said the one I do respect that I did listen to in the past was Patti Smith. 8)
-
Poly Styrene
Siouxsie
Florence
Debbie Harry
Eve Libertine
Pauline Black
Pauline Murray
Lana del Rey
Julianne Regan
Hazel o' Connor
Alison Moyet
-
Why no mention of Geddy Lee from Rush - sure she's shaky these days but her stuff in the 70s was second only to Yoko Ono.

OK, I'm sure this is a wind-up, but just in case...

A few I don't think have been mentioned yet but well worth looking up IMHO...
Loreena McKennitt
Lykke Li
Agnes Obel
First Aid Kit (2 sisters)
-
Loreena McKennitt
First Aid Kit (2 sisters)
A fan of both. Joseph Arthur is right up there in my book.
-
Can't believe I forgot to mention two of my absolute favourites:
Emilie Autumn (I'd say "Opheliac" is the best album to start with)
Skin (the lead singer of Skunk Anansie) whose two solo albums are superb. "Fleshwounds" is probably my favourite of the two, though.
-
I like Anna LaCazio from the cult (at least in France!) 80's pop band **** Robin:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh07X9CJrg8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrxElrG8mtc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-JYw_vcUes
I think her voice works very well with Peter Kingsbery's one.
Skin (the lead singer of Skunk Anansie) whose two solo albums are superb. "Fleshwounds" is probably my favourite of the two, though.
I saw a Skunk Anansie gig three years ago...it was absolutely great and what vitality and charisma Skin has on stage!!...thrilling!!
I haven't listened to her solo albums though.

BUMP!
Not entirely sure about that, but if you listen real close (to Mr. Sullivan's vocal in) "Horsemen" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGbOnAAx5_8) he's surely channelling Ms. Bush from here. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1DDndY0FLI) As for a lyrical influence... you can see it, hear it, taste it, in "Firework's Night" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdbyVJxVCRs), from this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXzx--YefD8) of hers. That's twice, and both influences from the very same Kate Bush album, "The Sensual World".
That said, I highly doubt the echo is done consciously, though. She just lives in him, naturally... as does he, within each and every one of us here. She's a part of him, in a very sacred, everlasting, special way. Damn! They would've made some really fine lookin' lads and lasses had they had a thing. Both incredible stunners, as far as I'm concerned! 8)
Ahhh, but of course... I could just be a seriously fcuked up individual, that hears and sees stuff, that probably isn't even there. :-\

Love Nina Peterson(Cardigans),Heather Nova,Beth Orton,The Pierces,1st aid kit,Rumer,London Grammar,Juliette Reagan, and not many of her songs, but i do like Falling into you by Celline Dion.
-
Pink....not all of her stuff but she has some good songs in her back catalogue. And having come through the age of Britney/Christallmighty Aguilera, all power to her.
-
Well, I'll go with PJ Harvey here.
Also a lady called "Nico" with Velvet Underground in late of 60's was awesome.
Björk is nice, very authentic.
Annie Lennox...
A few I don't think have been mentioned yet but well worth looking up IMHO...
Loreena McKennitt
Lykke Li

Lykke Li is funny. My wife likes that stuff too... (But nowadays she's more into crustcore and grind...as I used to do.) ::)

-
Please, just check this early video of a song called "Starblood": https://youtu.be/3USVDdMdTQY by the Cranes.
I remember I recorded it to VHS from King's 120 minutes.
-
OK... Amy Lee from Evanescence (big in the 2000's if you're not familiar). Superb voice, great range. This one is probably my favourite, 'Hello', an utter heartbreaker of a tune, about her sister who died at the age of three, apparently.

Wow! That's great there are others too recognising her talent. I especially love the material with the Swans, (admit I dunno other stuff that well). You've heard the much criticized "Burning World" album By Swans? There's the song Can't Find My Way Home (https://youtu.be/wR6niiAh0uY), sung by Jarboe. 8)

Johnette Napolitano from the band Concrete Blonde...quite powerful voice:
"Quite" a powerful voice???? What! One of the best female vocalists ever! :) Concrete Blonde are one of my favourite bands. A grossly underrated band. Their albums Bloodletting and Mexican Moon are fantastic.
If you want to hear her really at full tilt, listen to this:

I haven't listened to "Bloodletting" yet -and also to "Free" and "Mojave"- but it seems that for many fans it is one of Concrete blonde best albums, if not the best one...at least the only one which met commercial success. There are some good tracks on "Mexican moon" and their first album, also "Walking in London"...but my favourite is probably "Group therapy" with songs like "Violent", "Valentine", "I was a fool"...here's Johnette playing "I was a fool" and it's quite thrilling despite the bad sound!!:

:) :) :) "Bloodletting" is one of my all-time favourite albums, the other ones aren't half-bad, either, though! I love her version of "Tomorrow Wendy" by Andy Prieboy!

You're welcome! myself i didn't know about this Molly Tuttle until yesterday!! ;)
I was on the rateyourmusic site yesterday, reading the NMA reviews and threads/forums, and someone had put "From here" and the Molly Tuttle first album in his 2019 favourite albums list...so i went on Youtube, listened to her first album and her previous EP, i found them both stunning and, so like you, i then ordered these two cds of Molly Tuttle!

Loreena McKennitt - simply in a league of her own for almost 40 years now! Fantastic pianist, harpist and vocalist. Have seen her more than 20 times now, and she's never been anything less than perfect in concert.

A pleasure! It's criminal just how unknown she is, with all this fantastic talent and such a unique individual in every way. The last time I saw her was in Manchester a couple of years ago. A bit like NMA, she seems to be better known in Europe than here. I think the only other person on this board who knows about her is 8.

She's awesome. I've seen here a few times in the US and Europe (including UK, Royal Albert Hall), and each time she just exceeded any previous expectations. One of the very few performers outside of NMA who are always able to create a special atmosphere. Truly talented!

I know Loreena McKennitt's name but mostly for a terrible cheesy movie ha ha...you can hear her beautiful voice in:

I'm quite glad someone else here does know about her! I first saw her around 1989-90, I think, (I know it was somewhere around the time of Impurity!) and was blown away by her performance. I couldn't even sleep that night. The same thing happened on more than one occasion. Simply had never seen anyone like her on stage. For me, although the music is very different, the male equivalent is Nick Cave.

I was washing dishes yesterday, not really thinking about anything, when suddenly out of nowhere this song popped into my head like someone just pressed 'play'... It didn't leave me in peace.
The song is ''Gula Gula'' by Mari Boine. She's a Norwegian Sami, singing in traditional Sami joik style, combining it with jazz/folk/world music.
While the song was haunting me, I was baffled how it was possible that I had completely forgotten it and hadn't listened to her music for years... It's beautiful and I truly like the Sami languages.
I remember the first time when I heard her music...probably eighteen years ago, in a small jazz&blues festival back in Finland. It was a nice sunny day, festival tent on this small island, the ticket was cheap and you were allowed to bring your own alcohol. Slightly tipsy, I saw Mari Boine and her orchestra, and it was just beautiful, powerful experience. I knew nothing about her beforehand, but that concert blew me away.

LORI CARSON
PJ HARVEY
MARITTA KUULA
BRODY DALLE
Lori Carson has some great stuff and I found her music from a great sountrack for a film called "Broken Vessels". PJ Harvey - doesn't need an introduction. She's a fantastic and creative artist. Maritta Kuula is a Finnish rock/pop singer with very authentic style. Brody Dalle has some interesting punk rock stuff and I appreciate her experience of life in general that is a tragical story how one can get over dark and shady things and become a whole person.

Cheers, Guillaume. I checked the name of the film from imdb and I think I haven't seen that film. Yeah, Lori Carson is an artist that should be prefered to check out more her stuff. The song I know from Broken Vessels is called "Hands". It's almost like ambient, guitar driven unplugged track with nice vocals, then leading towards end with more percussive stuff. I have to check the song you mentioned from the film Waking The Dead.
-
I have to check the song you mentioned from the film Waking The Dead.
It's a nice song and it fits the mood of the film very well. It's a beautiful love story with an haunting winter, sad mood. Jennifer Connelly and Billy Crudup are brillant in this film.

Not sure how well known Brutus is outside Belgium. But they are one of my favorite bands. They started with 3, and didn't have a singer yet. So Stefanie Mannaerts volunteered to sing ánd drum at the same time, while they were looking for a singer. But that worked so well, that they decided to keep playing with three and have Stefanie on vocals permanently. I've seen them live several times, and they kick ass.
They were spotted by Foo Fighters two years ago, and were asked to be their support band in France. And then came corona, so that hasn't happened yet.
I highly recommend them. Their song "All along" was voted number one in the "Zwaarste Lijst 2022" this weekend. War, was voted number 12. Enjoy!

I haven't dug the album in depth yet, for the moment I have a preference for her previous album with Golden Highway (CROOKED TREE) but as usual her voice and her guitar playing are superb, and there are already three songs that I like a lot ("Stranger Things", "Goodbye Mary" and "The first time i fell in love")

(and once in an acoustic showcase in a Paris record shop :

BLOOM, Larkin Poe's new album, has just been released...not their best album but still some nice songs like "Pearls", "A little bit", "If God is a woman" and the nice end of the album "Bloom again". This is a band that I recommend seeing in concert, they have a lot of energy and joy in playing their music to share with their audience, the singer Rebecca Lovell has a beautiful voice and her sister Megan is a very good guitar player.
