« on: July 11, 2014, 01:42:07 AM »
So, our favourite performer is male, but,,

Been playing music by some nice ladies quite a lot recently. Some which I particularly like and admire for their song writing, and great singing voice --

Kate Bush
Amy Winehouse
Siouxsie Sioux
Chrissie Hynde
Bjork

Anyone else I should be listening to ??

Just thought about that and realised there are very few female singers I like lots of stuff by. Kate Bush is good but after that I struggle. I dunno if thats cos the genre that was given to me is male dominated. I tend to listen to the odd single and then any urge to go further stops.

Check out Louise Distras and Ellen Cox, both have supported  NMA in recent years, very different to each other but both excellent young female vocalists

P.J. Harvey
Amanda Palmer (The Dresden Dolls)
Laura Marling (sort of indie/folk artist)
Tori Amos
Feist (Broken Social Scene and solo artists)
Alela Diane
Neko Case

Female fronted bands
the Distillers
Pretty Girls make Graves
Dark, Dark,Dark
Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs

Of course I somehow doubt many people will like some of these as the gravitate toward 2000's indie rock/pop.

I used to like Edie Brickell back in the day. Not sure what she's doing these days. Also, I think some of Toyah's music was very interesting. On a more raucous, heavy rock theme, Girlschool's first few albums were great fun ! Also think the singer out of Within Temptation has a great voice.

Actually been pondering this today and remembered a band a German friend of mine told me about, Wir Sind Helden. Love the singers voice, Judith Holofernes, I think it is. Some cracking tunes too.

I never used to like Amy but, somehow, got into her stuff and now I think she's great.  Such a damn waste of talent.  Bjork... sorry, IMO she sounds like a pretentious catawailing cat.  Never got into SS, sorry.  But I do like a lot of tunes by Kate and I must investigate further...

Chrissie Hynde, though, is my favourite female vocalist ever.  She might have the range of certain singers that are considered classic vocalists, but there's so much heart and emotion there... The Pretenders, fantastic band.

I'm gonna add Dusty Springfield to this list.  My Mum was a fan so I grew up listeneing to her stuff...

And, now I'm thinking about tunes I grew up listening to, I'm thinking about classic Motown... excuse me a moment...  ;)

Undoubtedly Dusty and the Mo Town legends are  great singers, but did they write their material ? . Not trying to put rules in this topic, but I think we all have more respect singers who write their songs.

Like Kate Bush, the first female artist to get to U.K. number 1 with a song written by herself.

Song writers - Kate Bush , Dusty, Hynde - semms, we have more singers than writers
Female singers - I have to add all the great folk voices a Sandie Danny or Maggy Prior or Jaquie McShee - I`m a  fan of Pentangle, Fairport Convention and others of the folk scene or related bands of the old days
And me, I`ve got a black place in my heart
Still got this hole in me
Perhaps - I am the master of nothing?

Shush, I mis-read your original post... you're right, we should be talking about women singers who wrote their own songs and, much as I like the Motown girls, they didn't write their own stuff...

Still love Ms Hynde and I must get hold of her first solo album one of these days...

Pat Benetar. Blast from the past but thought she was a great singer. This is gonna be one of those threads where the more I think about it, the more itll come back to me. Pretty keen on Stevie Nicks's voice too

I'd have put money on it in that if we could transport ourselves back to the 80's and take the forum with us, there would have been a lynching for even saying the name Pat Benetar. Funny how as you get older, you become more understanding of things. Still hate most of the 80's though.  ;D

M/Ray

Yeah, don't get me wrong, lets face it, most people who buy music couldn't give a flying **** who wrote it if it makes you want a jig or sing along, but I think a performer is a true artist if they wrote it, or had a hand in writing it,

Yes, Mrs Hynde, what a voice. Even if she was doing cover version pop songs, they would sound good.
