As the life goes on and the group of New Model Army have moved forward to new levels, it would be nice to have a moment to look at what the past members are doing nowadays.
I remember Dave Blomberg had a band called Nozzle. Stuart is building apartments. So, how about Nelson, what are his whereabouts nowadays and does he have any new musical interests? I remember somebody posted after his depart he was seen at some of the gigs afterwards.
Would be nice to hear these stories if anyone knows about their present activities. They were honorable NMA members too. :)
EDIT: Nozzle was Blomberg's project band and Kip Keino was Nelson's...I think?
-
...Just found Blomberg's site at ReverbNation. Here: https://www.reverbnation.com/daveblomberg
And a vid about song Fatal Beauty shown there is located in the YT. Here: https://youtu.be/tb4cL11aAtc
Nice, peaceful song...

I believe Nelson is in a band called Surfquake

Moose played in The Damned and in a ska band called Pants.
Last I read he had trained to be a paramedic.
He used to have his own website and wrote a very moving piece when Rob Heaton died. I couldn't find it in a two minute search just now but I expect it is out there. The last time I read anything from it was when he discussed the songs he would suggest for the Collection. IIRC they included The Attack, which as he noted had no bass in it at all

You can find Moose's piece on Robert right here on newmodelarmy.org;

I spoke to Nelson and DW in the pub after a Freeborn John gig. Must have been 2007 or 2008 or something like that. Guinness, time and my mind are a little hazy...
Moose had done a course in agriculture or farming, and was going down that road at the time.
I could be wrong of course!
-
the first time i saw the damned them they had moose harris on bass, kris dolimore (of "the godfathers" fame) on guitar and rat scabies on drums and they were AWESOME. such an acomplished bassist, its a shame if he's not playing anymore. and stuart????? what a talent. i know i'm going to sound like an ignorant noob but why did he leave the band? especially when he did, just as they were about to become huge.
-
Yes, I saw the Damned with Moose. Rock City, can't remember the year, but it was a very long time ago. He was getting a lot of attention and having some banter with the crowd.
As to why Stuart left the band, sounds like you need to buy yourself a copy of the NMA documentary film ;)
-
can't argue with that. 8)

What Damned era was it when Moose was in the Damned?
Saw them live in 2000 in Milton Keynes. I also have the Machine Gun Etiquette 25 years DVD and think there were three bassist all in all; Stu, Captain Sensible and third one being Patricia in another concert.
EDIT: seen them live actually twice, other being a gig in Tampere in 2011. :)

Going slightly of thread but currently listening to carnival and some of Dave's guitar work is excellent, heavy as fck in parts

unsure of the date, but they were touring to promote an album that for some reason wasnt released until a looong time after. when it was released it was called "i'm alright jack and the beanstalk". it couldnt have been later than 1995/6 as i left to go travelling then and it was before that.

Moose was with The Damned 1993 - 1996, I saw them December `94 at Newcastle Mayfair.

Just passing through looking for something else but saw this so will post a quick reply.
It was 1992 to 1995. Although I could have carried on for a while after that, it was all a little intense, so I stopped. The album we did wasn't great, but the live work was fun, and three years of tours with them was a unique experience. I'd always liked The Damned, and when I got a call from Rat asking if I was interested I couldn't really say no. I never felt I belonged to it like I did with New Model Army. Looking back, the NMA years are the part of my career I'm most proud of.
Pants weren't a ska band, we were, and indeed still are on occasion, a pub rock band, doing rock/metal versions of twee pop songs for laughs. I did play with a 9-piece ska band, a 7-piece country and western band, a classical quartet, a punk band and a psychedelic band, among others. I like to do odd projects from time to time, and odd bits of session work here and there.
I still play, though not as much as I used to. I've been writing a bit recently and diversifying into other instruments, harmonica, melodica, ukulele, cello, violin and drums, and working a lot with old hardware synths and samplers. I have a small rehearsal and recording studio with a lot of gear in it.
I restore old British comic art for Titan Books, write articles for comic magazines, and have done a few projects with Irish comics author Garth Ennis, but that's a hobby and doesn't really pay the bills.
Never had anything to do with agriculture, although I grew up in farming country and live in a little farming village now. I did train as a paramedic, then went and got a degree at 40, and now work in NHS Education at the Open University in Oxford.
Oh, and I was in some documentary or other a couple of years ago...
-
Good to hear from you, Moose, saw you play many times and you always played a blinder, sir...
-
An answer to the topic title question "straight from the horses mouth". Nice one Moose. :)
-
wow we are not worthy! glad you're well sir and thank-you for your reply. cant play favourites but you were the bass player when i fell in love with this band so eternal thanks and respect.
btw -saw the damned again a couple of years ago -no rat, that arsehole sensible back and playing grimly fiendish! no competition.

my apologies, my fading memory conflated reading about Pants with reading about the ska band.
thanks for posting

Seems that ex guitarre player Ricky Warwick has a new soloalbum out:
Ricky Warwick: When Patsy Cline Was Crazy & Guy Mitchell Sang The Blues/Hearts On Trees (Doppelalbum)

Gee, there's been lots of interesting stuff. So great to hear what Moose is up to nowadays.
Ricky Warwick's part in the history of NMA has always been a bit shady to me. Didn't know there's been that strong connection with the Almighty and NMA.

Well he played on-stage guitar for a few tours before the "extra" guitarist was officially part of the band - so it seems a reasonable connection.

I just found this on youtube: a discussion panel about transition from dinosaur/glam rock music to punk. At about 3:29 The Damned play "Smash It Up" with Moose on bass. https://youtu.be/HDtixwbCdJ4

Great link that! Thanks for posting. Amazing how Glen Matlock still looks the same after all these years...

Moose about 9:30 ? start

In January 2013 we went to our local folk club down at Grayshott Village Hall here on the Surrey/Hants border to listen to the Churchfitters and were delighted to see Nelson playing drums with them. In the interval I had a quick chat with him. He was pleased to talk NMA. I was impressed that he remembered all the gigs at all the various venues where we'd seen him playing with NMA across the South over so many years. He told me he had retired from NMA to be able spend more time with his elderly father. I had to give him big respect.

Haven't been on the board for a while so having a look through some of the older threads and thought I would chuck in my tuppence! I stayed at a B&B on the banks of Rutland Water a few years ago which was run by a jolly fly-fishing guide - none other than Rob Waddington who preceded Rob Heaton. He still has a drum kit in his lounge and we had a jam to some old tunes. Top bloke! Bloody tasty home-smoked trout for breakfast too! You can find his guiding website online.
