I heard Ocean Rising for the first time in that radio programme last night. After the first few bars I thought "well, quite nice, but I'm not blown away". Then the song progressed and I was. I definitely like the softer side but the sheer raw power of the early songs also never ceases to amaze me.

So "navigating by the stars" is on my list. The physical CD seems to be hard to get, though. It's available on YouTube, apart from that I'll just have to wait till it surfaces somewhere or is re-issued.

Edit: Just saw it is available as download from the shop. Even though I prefer CDs that's good news.

(And Im pretty sure I went to a Queens of the Stone Age gig somewhen in late 2000 or early 2001   :). Can't remember much, though, since I didn't know a lot of their songs. I do have "Rated R" here somewhere and probably should listen to it again).

Navigation is in the shop as download?

(But YT is ok, if you don`t  have the money, because it might be a problem to find a real cd with a booklet for a normal price)

Flodhast - welcome, there`s so much to discover .....
And me, I`ve got a black place in my heart
Still got this hole in me
Perhaps - I am the master of nothing?

"Navigating By The Stars", "Ocean Rising" and QOTSA...

I heard Ocean Rising for the first time in that radio programme last night.  After the first few bars I thought "well, quite nice, but I'm not blown away".  Then the song progressed and I was.  I definitely like the softer side, but the sheer raw power of the early songs also never ceases to amaze me.

There's another, full-on drum-heavy version on NMA's "Today Is A Good Day" release.  Though I'm particularly partial to the much more stripped back, keyboard-driven version, I do find both versions of  "Ocean Rising"  absolutely visceral, mind-blowing, blinding, climactically intense!!  It's a fcuking phenomenal, sensual feast of the senses, actually.  hmmm, yesss! 8)

So "navigating by the stars" is on my list.  The CD seems to be hard to get, though.  It is available on youtube, apart from that I'll just have to wait till it surfaces somewhere or is re-issued.

I'm so sorry for even mentioning the solo album now, because I had no clue it was no longer available in the NMA shop.  I know how awful one can feel when there was treasure made, but no where to find it, get a hold of it, in this case, purchase the incredibly beautiful recording.  I was also rather shocked that it isn't even available on Spotify, as well.  And I don't understand why.  I'm positive the album would appeal to a lot of folks, perhaps even many completely unaware of NMA altogether.  This is all mind-boggling, puzzling, why it's out of print, particularly because NMA have their own record label.  Wouldn't it make sense to produce / release it through their own record label, then strike a distribution deal with some outside company or what-have-you, so that Mr. Sullivan would still remain sole owner of said art, work, recording.  But I don't understand how all this stuff works, as I'm not in the music business. :-\ I'm just a serious music junkie, 31-year-strong NMA/JS/RSC aficionado. :)

I did however, find the whole of  "Navigating By The Stars" uploaded by someone at youtube.  It's an album that really blossoms, in the quieter, darker hours of the day, particularly in the evening right before bed and into the night.  Not sure if that's intentional though, but that's when it's most effective, profoundly moving, affective.  I tend to listen to it most, then.  It's very different to NMA's material, but quite exceptionally stunning, just the same, but in a new, different kind of direction, way, musically speaking.  Genuinely hope you enjoy it, flodhaest. :)  "Navigating By The Stars"  by  Mr. Justin Sullivan.

I'm pretty sure I went to a Queens of the Stone Age gig somewhen in late 2000 or early 2001. :)  Can't remember much, though, since I didn't know a lot of their songs.  I do have "Rated R" here somewhere and probably should listen to it again.

How fcuking awesome! 8) I haven't had the pleasure of seeing any of  Mr. Homme's  musical projects, in a live concert setting, as of yet.  stealthfully soft sweet lol, I've been a bit focussed on a certain other band, I think you might've heard of them, they hail from Bradford, UK. 8)  I do have all of the QOTSA albums.  My very favourite being  "Lullabies To Paralyze"  and my least favourite is  "Era Vulgaris".  I really wish the guys had had something down before heading into the recording studio, for the latter release.  What a big mistake, on their part.  I've tried getting into "Era Vulgaris" over and over and over again, but it does nothing to me, for me.  Bit of a bummer, actually, because I know of the musical greatness that they're all tremendously capable of.  But I'm sure they had their reasons.  I'll still buy all their full-length records, 'cause Mr. Homme & co. are massively talented.  The man has one of THE most incredible voices in modern rock music.  Mr. Homme definitely has charisma, charm and that smokin' hot it factor down pat!!  GREAT band.  Love 'em! 8)

Thanks  :)  and I know. I'll probably stick to my plan to advance chronologically, so Strange Brotherhood would be next. Even though I'm tempted now to get to "Navigating by the Stars" first. I've come across "Tales of the Road" on youtube before and liked it a lot, so if the whole album is in that vein I get what you are saying here, 8:

And yes, the few available used ones are ridiculously expensive...

That's nice! Thanks for the link. I'm curious to get to the "Today is a good day version", but that will take some time.

"Navigating By The Stars" really needs to be re-released...

Flodhaest, your plan is the best plan. :) I too, prefer to go in chronological order as well.  Yes, the album "Navigating By The Stars" is indeed, very much in the vein of the song "Tales Of The Road".  You will love the album for sure then.  Sounds as though you haven't heard more than just  "Tales Of The Road"  and  "Ocean Rising" so far.  You can listen to the whole of it HERE.  May I make a small suggestion?  Flodhaest, if you can afford holding off purchasing a used copy of the album, that'd be better.  I say this for two reasons, the first being, that in 2 years time (if I'm not mistaken), "Navigating By The Stars" will be celebrating its 20th anniversary.  Perhaps Mr. Sullivan will consider re-releasing it, to coincide with that milestone.  Please note, this is just a wild guess and hope on my part, but it could happen though.  Who knows, it might already be in the works.

And the more important, second reason for holding off on purchasing a used copy... is that the recording artist will not receive a single cent of the used purchase when it is in fact their labour of love.  Support the artists you love, buy directly from them via their official online shops or at the live shows, whenever possible.  Just something for all of us to think about when purchasing music, etc..  All of the arts are really suffering at the moment because of the horrible covid-19 situation.  They need us, now more than ever.

I'm curious to get to the "Today is a good day version", but that will take some time.

It's on Spotify, if you want to hear it now, but can't afford it just yet.  I'm confident you'll love a lot of what you'll soon discover.  Happy listening, flodhaest. :)

8, you're absolutely right there and I try to buy as much from the shop as possible (except for albums that are not available there at all). It's just that I would much prefer a physical CD over a download...so a re-issue would be great. If that won't materialize, I probably should just get the download and look for a decent printer to print the cover art  8). But looking forward to listening to it, after all you said about it :). Maybe I have a peek at youtube.

I just made a rather large order the other day that also includes Today is a Good Day - so once that arrives I could have a go but I'll probably wait till I get there chronologically (I don't have Spotify, btw., I'm bit old-fashioned that way).

So, now to Strange Brotherhood.

So I decided to get 30th Anthology and a bunch of other CDs and put in a rather big order on the 28th. The status has been set to "shipped" since at least the 4th, I think it might have been even the 2nd. I still haven't received anything. My last (smaller) order got here 8 days after the date on the postage strip, orders before that even earlier. I know the shop has been stressed lately and I'm happy to wait  - but since the order is set to "shipped" I suspect the issue is with Royal Mail and that's putting me a bit on edge.

I didn't get signed-for-mail, so if anything goes missing it's my loss. So, before I write that order off and start thinking about ordering anew (signed-for, this time..) - has anyone else had Royal Mail take very long delivering to Germany lately?

I have seen other websites saying "delays with Royal Mail" so probably not too much to worry about just yet. Hope it arrives soon.

Finally got here today :). And my tickets for the gig with Orchestra Sinfonia Leipzig in Berlin arrived as well... so today is a good day, at least in that regard.

I'm just waiting for Carnial Redux now. Considering the time it took Royal Mail to deliver the last order that might take a while  ;D

Hello 8.

When I follow the link posted by Viv, I go straight to The Mill, NMA global gathering.  If I click buy, I am offered the option to sign in OR sign up, though I haven't tried yet.  I hope that lets you access the recorded stream, I want to give it another view myself!

Just been poking around the shop and noticed that there are a few copies of the 30th anniversary DVD set on sale - absolute bargain at £15, I've bought myself one so get in quick if you want to add this to your collection!

Thanks! Just ordered. And it looks like they had the solo-singles on sale (very cheap, too). Missed that, unfortunately..
