It USED to be the number of times this question has been asked on this board, but I think we're way over that now  ;D (see also my answer on this topic: http://board.newmodelarmy.org/index.php?topic=7271.0)

a popular answer has always been the number of BPMs (beats per minute), in other words the tempo of the song - which is in effect 225

I couldn't begin to guess.  But, I can tell you it's my favorite rock song of all time.  And I think the line "we never asked for any of this" sums up the NMA ethos, in as much as one exists, about as well as it can be. I still get shivers when I hear the opening guitar.

Myvtheory: Right at the end of the song, at the fade out, a sampled voice comes on and speaks of the universal declaration of human rights. If you look at paragraph 225 of the declaration「 it is about the rights of a people to self determination. I think Justin could well have named the song after that.

it's clearly because Justin is a secret railway fan and this song was named after the  Intercity 225  ;)

It's actually 225 in base 6, which is 89 in decimal and '89 is the year it was released. Obvious when you think about it.  ;)
