Well said Mike and JS.

It's difficult to explain to folk here in Spain what the 80s/90s were like in Britain (and they had enough of their own problems to contend with here to concern themselves with what was happening in Britain), but your two comments go along way to sum up that aching feeling in the gut when I think back to the days of not opening the front door just in case it was the baliffs/police or any other Poll Tax employee. The sad truth is, I still don't...

Some  harsh  comments here about Thatcher.

We are talking about a British Prime minister democratically elected three time by the British public, not one of the hierarchy of Hitlers Nazi party.

I know she made mistakes, I remember getting my Court summons for none payment of Pole tax,

Much is made of the first ever black president, what about the first ever Woman elected leader in Western Europe? Imagine how the old guard of the Conservative party felt when they were told they were going to be lead by a working class womann from the North !! -- they didn"t mind when they found out she had more balls than any other British leader since CChurchill.

I know I am in the minority here, but a forum needs a counter view point. Comments like "rot in hell" do no favours to a  forum. When you log on, there always seems to be four times as many guests viewing as members. What will they make of such comments

Harsh comments vs. harsh politics affecting lives, shaping society.
Rot in hell is a juxtaposition to rest in peace and just shows a different position and opinion than wellfaring (don't know if you can say that in english, i like it) statesmen or women, as if they are better than the rest of us.
ever tried. ever failed. no matter.
try again. fail again. fail better.

I repeat my post on Facebook here. Don't bother to reply with apologies and moderation for Thatcher to me. I have no interest in such views especially not tonight. Those who remember what our country and society was like before Margaret Thatcher undid the ties that bound us together in common cause and for the sake of her own ego, snobbery and pathological loathing of the working classes laid everything waste will understand the flame of bitter anger that burns still in my heart. Unashamed I am glad the world is rid of her wickedness and I pray she goes straight to whatever Hell is reserved for the likes of her.  She's dead. We who remember rejoice. And we mourn what we lost and what our children never knew. Peace to all of you.

Being from the Colonies. I can't say how her policies affected me  personally. Only those who lived under it can really talk about it. But I will say as one who lived thru the Regan/ Thatcher combo  I will say that We said the same things when Ronnie  Bit the Dust  and I have no love lost for  Ronald Regan even thou we share the 1st name . I will say that the  Falklands could have been handled better without war. and even thou England won with all the time that has passed  What did you really win ? 8)

Though I live far away from the UK I know what a scoundrel this woman was and what her politics and her deeds resulted with. I can only say that I'm sorry she died without ever getting jailed. She deserved nothing more or less then what happened to Mubarak!

13.5 million voted for her in each election, roughly. About a quarter of the population and we know which quarter.

As for the 'woman in power' business, how many female cabinet ministers did she employ?

Still, I suppose if you're going to slightly irritate some doddering Tory grandees in the late Seventies, the least you deserve as a reward is the opportunity to drain entire communities of hope.

Ah, what's the use, though? I've never seen anyone's mind changed on Thatcher. I probably never will, save for these children on twitter* presently complaining that people are speaking ill of the dead. I sincerely wish I could be that oblivious, though I'm not sure I ever was... I remember discussing her 1983 election victory in infants school, in the playground, at length.

I wonder if you see that anymore?

Living in Murton a pit village in the North East  in 1984 and being the son of a miner, today is a good day.
Seeing my father in tears most days, is something I will never forget.
Neither is searching the slag heaps to get coal to heat the house, going past police lines daily as we travelled to Easington for my last few months at school, and the police waving money at us.
Watching friends and families turn on each other and seeing a village once united totally ruined and filled with hatred and distrust.

Mrs Thatcher you gave me many many unhappy days in my life.
However as I sit here tonight with a bottle of Warsteiner  ironically you have given me a very happy day indeed. Bye.

Can we all please just stop and reflect for a moment and perhaps offer some sympathy for Satan and all the demons in Hell in view of who they're now sharing The Infernal Flames with..?

The fact that Blair’s version of the Labour Party simply continued her programme means I shall be equally happy when he goes too (perhaps even more so). [/quote]

Have to agree with Justin's view of the Blair government. It was another Conservative government with a red ribbon.

I remember Billy Brag saying in 1997 something like,, I have been campaigning for a Socialist government since 1979, and now the Blair government is in, I will continue to campaign !!

I will never forgive Blair for convincing me it was a good idea for us to go to war due the "fact" that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, and intended to use them against the West.

Can't believe they want sporting events to have a minutes silence for the evil *****.  Can't see that going down well in mining areas, or where there used to be manufacturing or the north
