Whats your favourate none NMA album,,,,,,,,,,,?
« on: August 23, 2013, 03:35:05 PM »
Of all recent topics, this one most of all I would love to see answered by the band members, to get an idea of which  fellow musicians have been an influence.

How about it Viv, can you do a quick survey of the band ??

Feel free to customize answers to you own preference, top three none NMA albums, top five, whatever, or even just top songs.

First of all any Nick Drake album for me, then The Beatles Abbey Road and then Tom Waits' Frank's Wild Years!

My favourite none NMA album,,,,

Generation-X by Generation-X  1978

Yes I know, Billy Idol, some cringe worthy videos in the 1980s but, he was there at the birth of the first generation of punk in 1977 being a member of the Bromley Contingent.

Generation-X 1st album was their  only real punk album. Like all good punk albums, recorded in just a few days. Has a very raw and rough sound to it. The lyrics quite good for punk, Idol talking of teenage angst. The best feature of the album, thee guitar work of Derwood. Very raw with loads of screeching feedback which he seemed to be able to get a tune out of. The critics at the time said it was as much a rock album than a punk album. But, that's punk-rock.

Best song on the album, called Listen. ere, av a listen   --  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwUik0qGxMQ

also, 100 punks   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59C7VJESeqM

and for Derwoods screaming feedback guitar, towards the end of the song,, Promises   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrrc0SqXT3A

After that it went a bit tits up with their next album, Valley of the Dolls, 1978, Produced by Ian Hunter who wanted a more Rock feel to it. King Rocker the most well know from it.

Then there third and last, 1981, Kiss me deadly by which time they had done a Bolan and reduced the name of the band to Gen-X and gone Pop. That said, Dancing with myself, a good pop song.

Then Idol went to the States and became a pop Princes, and Tony James left planet earth to form zig zig Sputnick.

When I was 17 - 18, I used to listen to that 1st album every night, in bed with my massive head phones on with the album spinning around on my 1970s second hand music centre. I can still listen to it today and enjoy it just as much.

OK, fave non-NMA albums, in no partucular order...

QUADROPHENIA, The Who... saw 'em doing the whole album live a couple of months back, awesome.  I also seem to remember that it's a certain Mr Sullivans favourite album, or one of them at least.

MEAT IS MURDER, The Smiths

IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE WITH GOD, The Pogues

HEARTATTACK AND VINE, Tom Waits

THE HOLY BIBLE, Manic Street Preachers

THIS IS HARDCORE, Pulp, especially with the deluxe edition and all those extra tracks...

THE STONE ROSES, first album.

ALKALINE TRIO, From Here To Infirmity

MARILLION, Brave

THE TRIFFIDS, Born Sandy Devotional

DAVID BOWIE - Hunky Dory

NEW ORDER - Substance

Rah! Rah! Rah! We're going to smash the oiks!

To many to Print here but If I was on  deserted Island and I had to have this as essential for surviving then These are my Favorites

Jimi Hendrix - Axis Bold As Love.

Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time.

Porcupine Tree - Up the Downstair.

 Rush - Grace under Pressure.

 Pink Floyd - Animals.

Of course all these bands have multiple albums that I have collected and enjoy and this does not include many great songs from bands as diverse as Gentle Giant  to Tool or Clan of Xymox  or Fields of the Nephilim that I also listen to but when you said Albums well I have to go thru the whole body of work for each album and those mentioned above are most consistent in the quality of the songs as a whole album. I left out many great bands and Albums  8)
Born to Raise Hell and Enjoy every minute of it.

Perry Farrell is a very talented songwriter, and Dave Navarro is a great guitarist..."Nothing's shocking" was also a stunning album but "And then she did..." and "Three days" on "Ritual de lo habitual" are pure genius, such beautiful, incredible, moving songs!:

Two brilliant albums with a very unique sound. Saw Jane's addiction live in 1991. They are a great live act. ;)

I would like to see them live...what do you think of their last two albums ("Strays" and the one released last year?)?
The other bands of Perry Farrell (Porno for Pyros and Satellite Party) were also pretty good.
