‘They don’t understand u’ .... musical differences?
« on: September 15, 2013, 08:54:37 PM »
Does your husband, wife, partner, or close mates have different musical tastes to you? Does it matter to you? Or does it add something to your friendships and relationships that you have different interests?  What do they say when you talk with enthusiasm and excitement about the music, lyrics, tours, new releases, experiences, and what they mean to you?

All of my mates and family love music with a passion. My wife and I met at a Smashing Pumpkins gig in 1992, and I knew I'd met the right girl when I saw she had the first 5 NMA albums like me! I'm a little bit more obsessed about NMA than any of my mates (apart from Shush!) but that's cool. I try not to go on too much about NMA as I don't want to bore people but I still enthuse about 'em, especially to the uninitiated, such as colleagues! Mostly people are surprised that I'll do quite a few dates each tour. They assume one gig would be enough!!

Me n my fair lady Mrs Stone like alot of the same/similar stuff..... She likes older NMA, but doesn't much care for the last decade or so........ But the she loves alot of more gothy/industrial/EBM stuff I'm not thrilled with. It works tho coz we don't argue over who has the kids at gig time!
When I first looked through her records 13 years ago I spotted History and Walk Among Us (MISFITS best and utter CLASSIC lp)........ I was in the right place as far as I could tell........  ;)
Still together so I guess it works pretty good! 8) At Rock n Bike a couple of years ago she got the first (and only) taste of live NMA. She gets it, but the whole out of the pit and everyone knowing each other etc is a bit more than she bargained for tho. lol
She says it was like being part of "A bloody religious cult or something!" lmao........

I met your tribe there mate and remember you teaching my lad the devil hand signal - 'twas a great day (despite the 3 hours of the Rammstein tribute band  ;D ;D)

Good thread Nicky...Now let me tell you that the prettier one of our partnership is the one with fantastic musical taste - she really does not like my faves but I don't mind and I can't blame her - I like mainly pretty awful stuff - most of the music I like is like comfort food or junk TV.  I don't watch TV - my equivelant of Big Bang Theory (is that the name of that show?) is a late seventies Rod Stewart record. I'd stand up and fight for The Faces but I accept that late seventies Rod is pretty dire - But I can't help liking it.  I do also like great stuff but mainly I'm a fan of very bad bad music.
I don't know why but very good music, well I can acknowledge it but I don't need it. (with a few exceptions like Pogues and Tuxedo Moon and Gerry O' Connor and others)
Why am I into NMA then you ask?
Well, just play any one of their records and there is your answer.
K?
No, my 'partner' hates my taste in music - it's one of the reasons why I love and respect her so much.

My partner's tastes and mine are very different. She likes Spanish 80s rock and myself anarcho punk and anything with a message, be it shouty or not. She does thankfully, or there would be no relationship, enjoy NMA and she'll be at the Barcelona gig  along with anyother person I can convince to come :) ...I've got the gig poster hung on my fleamarket stall!!!

My fella introduced me to NMA, so I guess I can say he's got pretty awesome taste in music.  ;)

He's introduced me to a lot of great stuff, and I've introduced him to my stuff. We've both gained a lot from it. On the whole, we have pretty similar musical tastes, although mine tend a little more towards the cheesy (some of the stuff in my collection would probably have you all retching)  and he likes some really dark stuff that I can't quite stomach (Wumpscut, for example... just can't get into them. They make me feel creeped out.)

The majority of stuff we like crosses over in a major way, though. It makes things easier and more pleasant. Music is my career as well as my passion, and to have someone who gets what I like and also gets what I *do* is really important to me. Also, we always have fun at the same gigs!

80's Spanish rock?  i'm interested, coz I saw BARON ROJO (Spanish mob I recall) in 81 with Gillan and The RODS (Dio's cousins apparently)...... They were pretty good, the "Red Baron's".. Is that the sort of thing?

Stoney, at first I thought you were comparing Baron Rojo to The Mob!!! Anyway, 'ar lass tells me she likes Loquillo, Radio Futuro, Duncan Dhu....Baron Rojo is a bit heavy for her. I suppose I should pay more interest or at least let her near the cd player once in a while ha ha. Got to say, though, the punk scene here is getting better and better all the time.

Are you across for the Barca gig?

Its been a while since I was in a relationship but I don't think it matters if the pair of you are truly into each other...

That said, I once had a girlfriend who was really into Bon Jovi... ok, not a big BJ fan, but I don't mind a bit of 80's big-hair rock once in a while, it reminds me of my teenage years, especially if I've had a few beers...

But she left me for the keyboard player in a Bon Jovi tribute band.  Two key words here... 'keyboard player'....

I wouldn't have minded so much if it was the bloody singer!

Anyway, just thought I'd share that with you...

 ;)

At the risk of "smut" accusations, it had to be pointed out....... You might've got the better end of the deal mate.  ;)

I think that the early mention of US rock band 'Bon Jovi' excuses me from later mentions of the letters 'B' and 'J'... jeez, this should be an episode of Sesame Street... 'This show is brought to you by the letters B and J and the number 69'...  ;)

This was a painful episode in my life, you insensitive buggers!
