BDAW Chart Position - The Other Thread
« on: September 30, 2013, 05:36:59 PM »
Just in:

"Between Dog and Wolf has become the band’s highest charting entry since 1993 this week in both UK and Germany, where it has charted at 34 and 31 respectively. The album is also the second highest new entry in the UK independent album charts, entering at 7, and is the highest charting record to date on the band’s own Attack Attack label."

It's well deserved of course, for the band and for the album.
But what do you think explain this chart position, because "High" and "Eight" for example both received very good reviews too from the critics but they weren't in the UK and Germany charts, back in 2OO7 and 2OOO, if i remember well...it seems that the last NMA album in the top 4O charts in UK and Germany was "The love of hopeless causes".

I guess that the Facebook and Youtube heavy rotation of "March in September" (almost 40 000 views in one month) really helped, also the fine reviews ;)

Would it be anything to do with obsessive people like me buying the cd and the album at the same time hence doubling the sales? ;)

I assume sales from the NMA shop do not count towards chart sales. I'm sure the final position would have been higher as many fans would have bought direct from the shop rather than from chart return stores. Anyway, great to see NMA back in the charts along with Nirvana and Roy Harper.

It's a very creditable result for a true independant.......

Does anyone know if the shop and mail order cd's n lp's counted in the figures? I know the old Gallop system was very odd, and used only certain shops to create the national charts...... Label's would target those shops for discounts and higher numbers of limited versions singles etc...

Who released the album in the UK and Germany?
Attack Attack or EarMusic/Warner?
I guess "labels" like EarMusic, EMI or Epic/Sony have more "power" and money to make buzz when they release their albums than indie labels, it explains in part why all the  NMA albums from the EMI years and "The love of hopeless causes" from Epic/Sony were all in the UK charts at least for a few weeks.

Are the UK and Germany the only country it has charted so far?

What about the french charts for example?
Here the album was released by EarMusic, they released the last of album of Deep Purple, among others bands.

All NMA albums charted in Germany, what I remember the last few ones somewhere between # 40 and #50 but only kept in for two or three weeks. Then everybody aware had bought it.

BDAW had an entry on #28 in the official charts today, definetely the highest position since LOHC, though I guess 20 years ago you had to sell at least three times as many as today

Do you have the numbers for NMA's albums sales in Germany?
I remember that "Thunder and consolation" sold over 250 000 in Germany and that "Impurity" (according to Robert Heaton in a NMA interview for a magazine in 1991) sold over 160 000.
Is NMA more famous (commercially) in the UK or Germany?
In France i don't know the numbers of album selling but they are sure less impressive than the german or UK sales.

Seconded, this cropped up in some other thread and I've wondered about it since but i know naff all about figures used for chart positions. I buy thru'the shop because i assume the band make more money that way maybe they dont and they dont get a sale counted towards chart position either - that'd be a double dip recession wouldn't it! Can't be right either, anyway does anyone actually know the answer to the chart figures conundrum?
