Other favourite artists/albums
« on: October 05, 2013, 03:04:06 PM »
This will have been broached many times before, but seeing that there's a thread further down about Justins favourite records there's a good excuse to do it again. Apart from NMA and related artists, what else are people here listening to?
Before BDAW came out I had 3 Alice Cooper albums on heavy rotation, Last Temptation, Brutal Planet and Dragontown. Other than that, Queensryche, Operation Mindcrime, Springsteen, Wrecking Ball and any late era Johnny Cash album.

Always listen to a lot of Northern Soul and also have Ipod on shuffle so don't tend to play anything in particular.

saying that I've played nothing since BDAW since I got it.

It's been played 4 times today  :)
Is is a crime to believe in something different?

As I've already mentioned Rush are the other favourite for me. I've seen them around 12 times and even went to Detroit, Michigan to see them. I usually go to 2 or 3 shows when they tour the UK.

Admittedly though since BDAW came out I've listened to nothing else and for around 6 weeks prior to it coming out I listened to nothing but NMA to get myself in the mood for the new album  ;)

Also love The Chameleons.

Like The Who, Stereophonics, The Clash, The Smiths, Green On Red, The Stranglers and most 70's/ 80's punk/ goth stuff.

And Tears For Fears. I used to do a paper round when I was 13 - 15 and would listen to Songs From The Big Chair on my Walkman (which wasn't a Sony Walkman as I was and still am poor) That album reminds me of plodding around with a bright orange bag full of the Manchester Evening News!

For those who are into good rockin' heavy metal guitar things, old fashioned but new anyway, i strongly recommend: The Sword..pretty damn good live..

Always a lot of Killing Joke - particularly "Democracy" and "Pandemonium", although "Night Time" is also a favourite. Haven't warmed to their newer stuff as much as I'd like to, although there are some cracking tunes on Absolute Dissent.

Always, ALWAYS Kate Bush. I've loved her since I was 13, and that's not set to change anytime soon. Favourite albums are "The Sensual World" (often thought of as her worst, but to me it's her best - go figure), "The Kick Inside" and "Hounds of Love". Endlessly fascinating, even after 17 years of listening.

Peter Gabriel, especially the albums "So" and "Us". Liked his recent covers album "Scratch my back" but prefer his own stuff, even though he really brought his own mark to all the songs.

Prong's "Cleansing" is usually on high rotation, too. Especially when I need to get myself into a "let's kick some ass" kind of mood.

Always Metallica, particularly "The Black Album" and "ReLoad" - also love"Master of Puppets" but I need to be in the right mood for that.

Aussie singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke is right up there, too - I love all three of her albums, but the third, "Nightflight" is probably the most accomplished.

I can't write this post without mentioning Tori Amos. Another artist I've loved since my teens - my favourite album is probably "From the Choirgirl Hotel" although they're all worth a listen.

Really interesting reading what you all have to say - there's a lot of overlap in tastes here, but also a hugely eclectic mix!

Apart from the usual suspects (Sisters/Cult/Bauhaus/Nephilim/Killing Joke etc.) I still love the The Chameleons (sadly more or less defunct) and The Waterboys (still very active).

In the last ten years I've gotten into a lot of American stuff like Richmond Fontaine, Jimmy White, The National and also The Decemberists. Am just discovering Woven Hand. Love them. All a bit more mellow. I guess I'm getting older.

None of these bands interest me at the moment though as I'm still stuck deep in my perpetual BDAW listening phase.

I agree, interesting to see what others are into. NMA is one of those bands that people like for different reasons so you get quite a wide range of genres among their fans tastes.

THIN LIZZY forever!...i love the songwriting of Phil Lynott, his hearfelt lyrics, sensual voice and bass style:

I also like Perry Farrell especially his works on PORNO FOR PYROS and of course JANE'S ADDICTION with their incredible early albums:

If you like blues, southern rock bands, a bit BLACK CROWES (but better??) here's an album i like very much from an underrated band, CRY OF LOVE...great guitars and voice!:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgdJmJjFGJc

I like the "One believer" album from late, missed bluesman JOHN CAMPBELL...very melancholic, touching album with an impressive voice and slide guitar:

I also like some the solo albums of Danzig, Neil Young, early albums of U2, The Cure, Billy Idol, also some albums of Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves.

As I've already mentioned Rush are the other favourite for me. I've seen them around 12 times and even went to Detroit, Michigan to see them. I usually go to 2 or 3 shows when they tour the UK.

Some albums of them to recommend?
I own the live dvd "Snakes and arrows" (is it a good place to start with this band?) but aside of this i've listened almost nothing from them..

There are around 20 studio albums to choose from. The problem with Rush is that over their 40 years as recording artists they have constantly changed as times have changed. There are hardcore Rush fans who hate certain eras because they are a break with their previous work.

I would recommend the following albums:

A Farewell To Kings (1977)
Permanent Waves (1980)
Moving Pictures (1982)
Clockwork Angels (2012)

The stuff between 1983 - 1989 is very "synth" heavy and is probably something I would recommend listening to once you have tried the other stuff.
