What do people here make of the 2 top chaps at the EDL quitting and joining a multi racial think tank to try to combat all forms of extremism?

From the other side of the world it sounds like a good thing but I don't really feel sufficiently informed to have an opinion on this.

I'm not entirely convinced, but there is a fine photo of Tommy Robinson with his arm around a chap called Mohammed Ansar and it looks like there is some genuine warmth there. I think it is what we would call a good start. I hope it's real.

From the limited amount I know about the EDL it would appear that they are pretty much a one man band and if their "leader" has resigned I feel that they will eventually fizzle out and be no more. That doesn't mean that these thugs are not there but they will not be organised and will remain isolated and have no focus.

Are they genuine in their renunciation of their involvement with the EDL?

I feel it is better that they are working with the Multi Racial Think Tank thing than organising their obnoxious right wing street battles which no itelligent free thinking person wants.

Personally speaking, I'd love it if someone from what is basically a dumb-**** thug mob had a genuine change of heart and wanted to do something decent to make up for what he'd said / done in the past...

Or perhaps he got so much hate aimed at him and his family, he's just shitting himself...

Fair play to you for chucking this one out here.

My starting point for all politician types is one of suspicion. I read a quote from someone once which said something like "the only people allowed to be Prime Minister should be those who get dragged kicking and screaming into No.10". Wish I could remember who said it! I've got it in my head that is someone like Oscar Wilde but buggered if I know.

Anyway, it seems a very strange change of tack. A genuine change of heart or a cynical media move for some reason? Dunno maybe its about tactics and when the next murderer commits the next atrocity they can stand up and say "Well we tried to be reasonable but obviously they are just savages so kick 'em all out".

You'd hope that someone sat them down and demolished their argument getting them to see the other side and this led to the change of mind but I'm afraid I can't quite go for that.

I think this one depends on what happens next.

Myself I reckon there is a lot more behind this than a change of heart. I think the pair of them have been seriously lent on. But right now a decapitated EDL is a much less effective one. So whatever is behind this, it is a good thing. I seriously doubt if they will get any serious numbers in Bradford this Saturday. The cult of Tommy was a big deal to EDL sheep so this is a big loss. Good riddance.

Tommy Robinson is now apologising to muslims and helping police identify racist members of his organisation. It's all a bit fishy. Do you reckon he was working with them from day one? The naive person in me still hope he is someone who has seen the error of his ways, but my instinct is that there is far more to this.
