'calling the Germans "the enemy" was such a politically correct thing to do it made me ill. So now we can't even say the Germans were the bad guys in WWII?'

Fooking hell, Space, even by your desperate trolling standards, that was a new low.

Come on, man, knock off that trolling stuff. You people are actually coming across far more immature than Space ever did.

That point I bring up about calling the Germans "the enemy" is a very valid point and one (if there were adults present) that should be discussed. The on-screen titles in the film DUNKIRK specifically say "the British" and "the French," but then say that they were being driven out of Europe by "the enemy." Huh? We can say British and French were involved in the Dunkirk incident, but not German???? Seriously, it is political correctness gone amok.

Can you offer an explanation why Germans were referred to as "the enemy"?

OK, guys, you're gonna see something rare and unexpected here.  Are you ready?  I'm actually gonna apologise to Space.   :o

I misread the point he was making... I probably shouldn't post stuff when it's late and I'm tired and a few beers might have been consumed. His point was that the Germans were specifically referred to as 'The Enemy' and not 'Germany'.  I just focused on 'we can't even say the Germans were the bad guys in WWII?' and had a bit of a knee-jerk reaction. Very personal issue for me, seeing as my Grandad and his brother both fought in WW2 and suffered accordingly.

But, yes, I got it wrong and I retract my comment.

Still don't like you much, Space, thanks to our history and if you want to gloat then fair enough. But this one was 'my bad'.

Anything you'd like to own up to?   ???

Rah! Rah! Rah! We're going to smash the oiks!

There were no Italians or Japanese hounding the British at Dunkirk.

It was a rather disturbing thing to read "British, French...the enemy" in the onscreen titles of DUNKIRK. Come on, now, we can't even say 'Germans' in a WWII film?

The film DUNKIRK as a whole was extremely disappointing. When the best thing you can say about the film is that the pop star Harry Stiles was the best thing in it...well, that shows you the film was a failure. (No disrespect to young Mr. Stiles. He was indeed rather good. And good for him that he doesn't play a hero-type. Brave move on his agent's part to get him that part. And full marks to Harry for taking the part.)

Oh, of course I am going to gloat. Must live up to this reputation you lot have given me.

What would I like to own up to?
When I was a kid I placed a paperback book into my shopping bag and walked out of the store with it. Book cost only $0.95...that's less than a dollar for you foreigners who don't know. But that small cost doesn't matter...I stole something. And for those that are curious, the book I stole was ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES -- high-brow literature.

Youre just sad because its not the usual Hollywood war film, where America did everything in World War 2. I think its based around the time your Government were leaving Europe to sort itself out. I suppose it could have given you a mention. Not by name. Just the ponderers. "To beat this enemy, we might need support from the ponderers". Maybe theyll put it in Dunkirk 2?!?!

Yeah, you got that right. It sure isn't a Hollywood war film. Hollywood -- America -- is about winning. Seems British war films are always about losing. "Dunkirk," "Gallipoli," "A Bridge Too Far".... I suppose Brits don't have any victories against the Germans so they make films about the losses.

Oh, and I see your history books over there stop at December 6th, 1941; so let me tell you something. On December 7th 1941 the Americans entered WWII...and won the whole darn thing.

Or any of the dozens of 'Nam films
1. Uhh, Pearl Harbor was a sneak attack. They punched us in the face when we were asleep. Real honorable, right?
And if you read the full book on Pearl Harbor you'll see the final chapter deals with two places called Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We won. Oh, boy, did we win. (And by the way, if you are from the UK you should not talk about the Japanese. Your nation actually built well constructed bridges for them during the war!!! Ever hear of the River Kwai? We blow up Japanese bridges, and your guys build them for the Japanese! I'd rather be William Holden than Alec Guinness.)

2. Vietnam films always show the bad in Vietnam. There was much good there, but Oliver Stone and Frank Coppola just want to show the bad. John Wayne had a Vietnam film called "The Green Berets." In that film we win.

Interestingly Russia, Korea, China and Nazi The Enemy have/had similar ideas in their film making. In any case. Its all history. Id hope the worlds moved on since then. However Fury wasnt a we won film nor Private Ryan. More to do with the bloody horror of it

With regards to Nam, the war you lost on your own two feet, I rather think the American public wanted you out of it because of the bad. Thats the lasting impression of that war.

I think this topic of conversation is in danger of going sour and its a bit disrespectful, even in jest. Im calling it quits

Space your deluded potted version of history, no doubt created by the war films you have watched in place of reading books with history and facts in them, whereby everything ever done wrong in the past was  done by others and all put right by the Americans is typical of your trolling on this site and I suspect embarrassing to other Americans who use this forum. I have until now only really found your trolling to be only amusing, if maybe slightly embarrassing to the forum and the band it represents.  This post where you make light of the war crime that was the Burma railway is the first time you have actually offended me. - well done. For the record, our nation did not build well constructed bridges for the Japanese. Our prisoners of war rather than face certain death were forced to build a railway, many thousands dying a terrible death in the process.

Rest in peace to them all.
The longer this century goes on, the more I feel I belong in the last one.

1. It's called gallows humor. And if you knew anything about the atrocities in Burma (and elsewhere during WWII) you'd know the British soldier was quite adept at gallows humor. It was one of very few things that got those brave men through such desperate situations. God bless them all. (And God damn those Japanese who put them through it.)

2. And if you want to really learn about the Burma rail line, I suggest you stop watching movies and read a book called "The Railway Man." Yeah, they made a movie of that book, but it is the book that brings tears to any man's eyes. Possibly the best WWII book I have read (and I have read hundreds of them).
"The Railway Man" by Eric Lomax -- read it.

Before my time, but that war was a horrendous, monstrous mistake. Only a small handful of us here wanted it...and unfortunately they were the politicians in control of making policy.
