"Are you my mummy?"  :o

Just finished the two-part-story "The empty child" and "The doctor dances". The best episodes of Dr Who season 1 so far, downright creepy, combined with very funny moments, almost perfect television. We are very much enjoying the show, watching one or two episodes almost every night, except for Friday, when we had to go and see Justin :)

One notable thing though is how much more difficult it is to understand the actors, something I have noticed in a lot of British film and TV, if compared to American productions. It will be interesting to see, how we will manage, once David Tennant comes on board. We had to switch to the dubbed German version of "Broadchurch", as it was almost impossible to understand him there.

'Rose... I'm trying to resonate concrete'...  ;D

Keep on with Doctor Who, some great stuff ahead!

Just watched episode one of the new BBC show 'Bodyguard', second episode showing tonight.  From the guy who brought you the superb 'Line Of Duty' and this one lives up to those standards for sure.  Wasn't quite what I was expecting but all the better for it.  And he says Keeley Hawes in it, and Keeley is always great.  I think this is gonna be a good 'un.  Trailer here...

Update on ep 2 of 'Bodyguard'... it's probably the best UK show this year.  Get on it.

As you were.   ;)

after my 17h experience with the vietnam war docu on netflix, i chose to watch "Platoon" again. Oliver Stone is one of the important directors of this time, and with Platoon he opened some deep covered things of the american soul, mostly in veterans. The extra stuff on the blu was very informing and could have been out of the documentary.

I thought i take on "Full Metal Jacket" after that, but yesterday i saw such a fun movie to watch and relax and enjoy: "First Men in the Moon"
Really funny in an old fashioned way, suberp special fx, this movie was produced by Ray Harryhausen and of course he did the effects. I love his movies and his stop-motion art. This movie on blu-ray was such fun to watch. And it has some nice extras, too,  an hour long documentary about Harryhausen.

If you are on a Vietnam kick, I wonder if you have ever seen one of the best Vietnam films ever made: IN COUNTRY.

A real hidden gem of a film and definitely a top 5 Vietnam War film. The film is also of note for the brilliant English actress Emily Lloyd who due to mental illness dropped off the face of the Earth. She was in A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT, but IN COUNTRY is her finest work. Such a talented young actress...and then she disappeared. Sad. Back in the day she was one to watch.

Check out IN COUNTRY. A very, I'll use the over-used word, powerful film. Has a line of dialogue in it that is one of the saddest lines in all of film.

Saw Bad Samaritan a while ago, a decent enough horror / thriller, but I wish David Tennant, an actor I really like, would do something that would really elevate him to better things... he seems to be scrabbling around on the 'B-list' these days, although he seems to be always in work, so that's something...

Cthulhu, I've got that Vietnam thing ready to watch on Netflix, but after a few weeks of getting into my new job (which is great and frustratingly hard in equal measures!), I feel in need of lighter entertainment after a day at work, not least because I often fall asleep... rest assured, a binge-watch over one weekend is in order, it looks great!

Oh , and whilst it might not be ALL about Vietnam, I always liked Mr Stones 'Heaven And Earth', somewhat under-regarded iMO.,  Trailer makes it look a bit corny, but it's a great watch... shame the young lady who played the main character died recently at quite a young age.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yYV6k4t-Ec

Interested in knowing what you think the top Vietnam War films are.

The Oliver Stone trilogy (PLATOON, BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY, HEAVEN & EARTH) is pretty tough to beat. But nothing tops APOCALYPSE NOW. A flawed epic, but the flaws actually make it great. Coppola dared to do something great. I admire that. His failures were bold.

Give a list...I'll give mine. See where we differ.

The second viewing of "Birdman". I cannot praise this movie enough. Never seen such a flow of the story and by flow it's meant by word, because it is one big planned sequence with no visible cuts. Michael Keaton at his best, the meta-layer of the movie about a guy who once was a succesfull movie super hero no trying to make real art at the broadway. terrific soundtrack, feeling like played live during the recording, sometimes the camera passes the drummer in a room playing the score. Fantastic!

@whirlwind
well i cannot say i have seen many vietnam movies. to me its about re-watching and re-thinking the all around cliche and topic of vietnam. growing up in the 80s it seems that almost every movie has some connection to vietnam, the veteran, th ejungle, the flashback...

So after watching Platoon i thought let's have a lighter kind of movie topic related and watched the first episode of MASH. I had to find out that it wasn't about vietnam, but i plays in korea in th elate 50s. So this kind of misunderstanding is present in me and i think in my mind many things are mixed up with the end category being vietnam. even some ww2 movies fall into this.

But to list the few i know about it would be:

Platoon
Full Metal Jacket
Combat Shock
Apocalypse Now Redux (only saw that version)
Rambo

Soon to be watched:
The Deer Hunter
In Country

Actually the Vietnam War was taboo for many years in the film industry. Hollywood wouldn't touch it. Who really wanted to think about such a divisive subject? During WWII there were hundreds of films made about the war...but during the Vietnam War? Only one really, the John Wayne jingoistic film THE GREEN BERETS.

You know what the first major film that dealt with Vietnam was? I remember when it came out and it was shocking because of its portrayal of a Vietnam vet. It was Scorsese's/DeNiro's TAXI DRIVER. And that film did soooo much to portray the Vietnam war vet in such a negative (psycho) light. All Vietnam films that followed used that film as a template. A nut, a loose cannon, a loner waiting to explode, that was how Hollywood portrayed the returning Vietnam vet. Go watch BLACK SUNDAY for a really wicked example of that (Viet vet Bruce Dern wants to fly the Goodyear blimp and do a 9/11 to the Super Bowl!). Even a vet who was on the side of right - John Rambo - was played as a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

While WWII films portrayed those that fought as brave heroes, the majority of the Vietnam films portrayed those that fought as psychos. There are exceptions of course, but most Vietnam films always show a vet as a nut (Duvall in APOCALYPSE NOW, Berenger in PLATOON, Walken in DEER HUNTER...).

2)
If you thought the TV show MASH was about Vietnam, don't be ashamed. The makers of that show, and the original movie, intentionally set out to make it that way. They wanted the audience to see it as Vietnam. They wanted the audience to think about Vietnam while they were watching MASH. The original film came out right smack in the middle of the Vietnam War and it was a clever way to make a Vietnam war movie without actually making a Vietnam war movie.

3)
Dude, I feel bad that your first exposure to APOCALYPSE NOW was that ridiculous Redux version. Oh, was that a waste of everybody's time. The original version meanders and gets unfocussed a bit, but that REDUX version really meanders and gets unfocussed. Next time you watch that film, just stick with the way it originally came out.

i thought about adding taxi driver to the list but i find "combat shock" much better in comparison. a very low budget but very intense movie.
"A dangerously disturbed Vietnam veteran struggles with life 15 years after his return home, and slowly falls into insanity from his gritty urban lifestyle."
