I agree about what has been said about Kate Bush and Chrissie Hynde, they are great voices...i remember Justin saying that he is a huge fan of Kate Bush.

"Runningup that hill" is an awesome song:

I quite like some songs of Sheryl Crow too...:

Pat Benetar. Blast from the past but thought she was a great singer. This is gonna be one of those threads where the more I think about it, the more itll come back to me. Pretty keen on Stevie Nicks's voice too

Damn, I was well into Pat Benetar during my teenage years... totally cheesy song coming up...  ;D

"Love is a battlefield" was a catchy song:

Others fun hits of the  female singer/song writers of the 80's...

Laura Branigan's "Self control":

Lita Ford...:

Yes, I agree, Sheryl Crow, good singer/song writer. Not got any of her stuff, but all I have heard is quite good.

Yes, I have heard JS in interviews, or read somewhere that he likes Kate Bush. I have to say, I did wonder if to any extend "Summer Moors" was a follow up or sequel to her "Wuthering Heights" ??

I own a few cds and live dvds of Sheryl Crow and there are some pretty good songs ("Home", "Redemption day", "My favourite mistake", "Everyday is a winding road", "If it makes you happy", "Run baby run"...), i quite like her self-titled album from 1996.

I also remember an interview of JS during the release of "Between dog and wolf" saying that he has just read Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" and thinking it was absolutely wonderful, so "Summer moors" is surely under the influence of "Wuthering Heights".

For sure is it influenced by the book, I was just wondering if to any extent it is influenced by Kate Bush's song of the same title also based on the book, with JS being a Kate Bush fan.

If the band arrange a Q/A session again, perhaps I'll ask  ;)

Guillaume, I was also a fan of Laura Branigan back as a young boy, bit of a teenage crush going on there, and I think Self Control is a cracker of a tune... I was genuinely saddened by news of her death a few years back...

OK, Alanis Morrissette... yeah, she had that one huge album (which I wasn't all that fond of) but that was 15 years ago... she's done some pretty good tunes since...

Alanis Morrissette, that's another artist who's stuff I have heard I have liked, but never got any of her material.

Gotta agree with Alanis Morrissette and Sheryl Crow. Did have a couple of albums by both but long since gone. Sheryl Crows cover  of First Cut is brilliant and Thank You by Morrissette is a song I never get tired of.

Apart from the ones mentioned already I totally adore Natalie Merchant (ex 10.000 Maniacs singer).

And the Cowboy Junkies are a female-fronted band that I like a lot. 'The Trinity Sessions' is a classic album

Agreeing with the support for Tori Amos - she's been one of my favourite artists for almost 20 years, and seeing her live is quite the experience... she's a mad one, but all the best ones are, if you ask me!

Also really like Ane Brun. Her stuff is a bit darker and more guitar-based, but she has a haunting voice and a real way with words.

I'll stick my neck out here and suggest the Australian singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke. She's possibly a bit more towards the mainstream (well, she's had a couple of Aussie number 1 singles) but she's one of my absolute favourite artists (I walked down the aisle at my wedding to her song Space They Cannot Touch).

Here's one of my favourite Kate Miller-Heidke tracks, "The Devil Wears a Suit": http://youtu.be/q3FVQynT3pU

I have to admit upfront that I don't have or listen to a lot of female singers. That being said the one I do respect that I did listen to in the past  was Patti Smith. 8)

Why no mention of Geddy Lee from Rush - sure she's shaky these days but her stuff in the 70s was second only to Yoko Ono.
