Britpop anyone ?

Now some 20 years old !!

One of those brief periods in mainstream music when alternative music becomes popular. At the time it felt like Indie part two.

Some of the bands I liked at the time, and still like, --

Ash
Blur
Divine Comedy
Echobelly
Pulp
Suede
Supergrass

Like some Blur and really rate Supergrass's 2nd? album, In it for the Money. Some outstanding tunes on that. Don't mind a few Oasis songs either (mainly from the first two albums).

The whole Britpop thing... loved it.  It was the soundtrack to my mid 20's (when I wasn't listening to metal  :).  I had a girlfriend from Essex at the time who dragged me to Camden on sevral occasions which was, at the time, the trendiest place in the whole of the UK...

My opinions on the bands you mentioned...

Ash... bloody great band, I can't believe they played my hometown a couple of yers ago, ******* brilliant live band, ask Dan (you met him in Warrington...)

Blur... wasn't all that keen on them but MODERN LIFE IS RUBBISH is a ******* ace album...

Divine Comedy... sorry, don't know their stuff all that well...

Echobelly... again, ask my mate Dan, he was quite into them...   ;)

PULP... bloody love them and I think I have a new thread coming on... look into that tomorrow!

SUEDE... ditto, another thread...

SUPERGRASS... A few good tracks, but I can't say they were a fave of mine.

You didn't mention OASIS... the first two albums were excellent, the third was OK, after that it's a bit of a mixed bag... I'd say that the B-sides album was well worth a listen...

Whatever... anyone else got an opinion?

Got the first two Oasis albums, and they are very good. Have to say, it took me a couple of years to get into Oasis in the 90s, I just didn't like the Gallhager Bros. They used to talk such shite all the time. They seemed to make being a chav cool. Think the lyrics are poor on the two albums, but the tunes, guitar work, superb.

I liked it because it made listening to the radio a lot more bearable but I never seriously got into any of the bands in the same way as some of my 80's favorites. A lot of them had some good songs though.

Echobelly stood out to me. 'Dark Therapy' is an awesome track. Also really liked Ride but they weren't really Britpop, were they? Same with Pulp.

Supergrass were a lot of fun too.

Never particularly got into Blur or Oasis. Just got annoyed with the hype. The first two Oasis albums have a lot of Classic tunes on them though.

20 years, eh? Feeling a bit old now :(

first two oasis albums were class in the most part. very few fillers there.

Amazing the Brit-pop Oasis / Blur battle of the bands race to No.1 is now over 20 years ago. Remember it well.

Funny how both bands put out crap songs to try and win that 'battle'.... if Oasis had put out 'Don't Look Back In Anger' as their contribution (not the f-ing awful Roll With It) they'd have won it hands down... but if Blur had put out 'The Universal' (brilliant tune) it might have gone the other way...

I've always thought that the Blur drew their influences from old classics like The Jam. Especially Jam's later stuff; (The Gift album) Town Called Malice, Carnation and Just who is the 5 O'clock hero. Earlier Jam was stuffed rather more with the rude boy and -77, Oi culture before a mod revival.

The Gift album wiki article seem to mention Liam Gallagher covering the Carnation.

I can agree with that. In both cases one of their weaker songs -- ideal for topping the pop charts
