Metallica..Anyone?
« on: February 20, 2018, 08:37:58 AM »
So,inspiring by Master Ray's last Killing Joke thread I'd like to know your thoughts.Your favourite Metallica albums and what do you think about them today?.A band I'm listening some time to time and I'm a fan of Master Of Puppets think it's their best until today and second one for me is Garage Days Re-Revisited $5.98 E.P.Most people I know are fans of Black album and Justice For All.Except a few songs like Blackened,Shortest Straw,Harvester of Sorrow and One I didn't like the entire album though I tried to love it in years. The Load era is also something I have no idea about only a few songs.Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning are great albums too..Saw them live only once in 1993.I'm quite sure loss of Cliff Burton changed many things in band's music and if he were alive today, there might be a different version of Metallica.

Master of Puppets, Justice for All are very good albums. Their are some decent songs on Load but for me it was a change in direction and cant say I like much since. Nonetheless they are still a big band and from all the Thrash bands, theyve probably been the most successful. Preferred Anthrax myself, but it sounds a bit dated. Metallica's back catalogue has lasted well.
Hala (from the Anglo-Saxon word "halh", meaning nook or remote valley), until it was gifted by King Henry II to Welsh Prince David Owen and became known as Halas Owen

I've had a very on / off relationship with Metallica.  I only really, like so many other folks, got into them with The Black Album.  It didn't take me long to investigate the back catalogue.  Their best is, obviously, Master Of Puppets, IMO the finest metal album of all time, there isn't a wrong note on the whole album, absolute perfection.  Ride The Lightning is almost as good, barring a couple of tracks, and Kill 'Em All is a fine example of a band who will go on to be great with all the rough edges still there and waiting to be chipped off.  Justice, though...?  what happened to the bloody bass?  Yes, it's no secret that after Mr Burton's death the boys gave Mr Newstead a tough time and put his stuff so low in the mix that he might just as well have not showed up.  A metal album without a decent bass sound is a sad thing, plus it doesn't help that there are so many overlong tracks... a producer with a decent editing head on their shoulders would have much improved the end product.  Again, IMHO.  And then we have The Black Album... oh heck, I should be calling it 'Metallica', the official title, but old habits stick  ;)... which is obviously an absolute commercial monster that I doubt anyone saw coming.  For me it's like Thunder And Consolation in that I listened to it so many times in the past that I rarely stick it on anymore, I know it so well that I can play it back in my head at any time...

After that, such a mixed bag.  The Load / Reload era is, as so many folks have said, a decent ten or so track album lost in more filler than a crumbling brick wall.  Saint Anger (title track and lead single aside, which briefly made me think the band could be back on form)? The only reason that it's not the worst Metallica album ever is because they did that fook-awful thing with Lou Reed.  Death Magnetic and Hardwired To Self Destruct are certainly better, actually some pretty good tunes on those two, but still one of those scenarios where you spend much time convincing yourself that a band you loved are 'right back on form' when deep down... you know they aren't.  thank God we've never had that problem with NMA.

Actually I agree with BER that the double disc Garage Days thing is great.  Shame Metallica's songwriting isn't up to the standard of some of those tracks these days.

Blimey, that was a ramble!  But, hey, BER, you asked!   ;)  Looking forward to what anyone else thinks, these are just my usual silly opinions, other opinions are equally valid.  Apart from that album they did with Lou Reed, that was undeniably shit.  ;D

As with KJ I started listening to them in the early days of Kill 'em All, Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets(totally agree with most on here as its the best album they've done)

Also I expect as most I have Justice and 'that' black album

Love them both and also played far too much and haven't listened to them for a while but I must admit that One is still one of my favourite tracks

Still undecided on Death Magnetic and Hardwired To Self Destruct

also have the following releases
Garage Inc.
Load
Reload
S&M
Thunderdome 2
Until It Sleeps Part 1
Until It Sleeps Part 2
World Tour '93 (Triple bootleg CD)
The Unnamed Feeling E.P.

The "Master Of Puppets" and "And Justice For All" back to back brilliance was astonishing.
And then to follow that up with their monster Black Album....at that point Metallica were the best band on Earth.

But their best moment is that "Garage Days Revisted" EP which was sandwiched between "Puppets" and "Justice." My God, was that a revelation. Easily the greatest cover album ever released. They turned every one of those songs into something great. "The Wait" is a masterpiece. One of those rare songs that make you scratch your head and wonder how mere human beings can come up with something like that. The Sistine Chapel, "King Lear," the Magna Carta, man on the moon, and "The Wait"....mankind's greatest achievements.

all comments are nice to read so I agree with you Master Ray I feel the same on Metallica as on/off relationship. And as Red said I have no idea about Death Magnetic and Hardwired. Some dedicated followers of band say Hardwired is like a back to roots album.St Anger sounding good but far from their classic melodic riff style.I like Metallica when they play punk-hardcore covers more. There was a rumor that James Hetfield would make a solo country record but I guess it's only a rumour.

Oddly, BER, I wouldn't be adverse to that... I don't like country music much but 'Mama Said' was one of the better tracks on Load IMO... yeah, I surprised to be hearing that as well, and I posted it!   :)

The outro of Call Of Ktulu (sic) still gives me a semi, twenty five or so years after I first heard it.

I loved Metallica as a kid, but somehow they turned into a bunch of sad, fat old men who made shit albums and got away with it based on the quality and passion of their first three.

Uhh, can't we say that about most bands? I guarantee you that some say that very thing about New Model Army.

Definitely not

In my opinion they're the best they've ever been in the last few years

Marshall and more so Ceri have made such a difference musically

Still love the early stuff and as I've mentioned previously Smalltown England is my favourite track but Angry Planet and Born Feral are a very very close second :) :)

Well - Greg Graffin of Bad Religion has done two Americana albums, so it's not out of this world.

New Model Army is a unique band.I don't like comparing bands or music but they will be my no:1 band forever for sure. They have a soul that most band's have no.I can't say Im a Metallica fan.Sometimes on sometimes off. They are great players but things Hetfield said about Guantanamo prison in an interview made me pissed off.And Lars has no respect to his fans to be honest he isn't a personality I can stand.Anyway that's not the point.Only Metallica thing I have is Garage Days LP and love that raw sound. They did a lot of shitty things too in my opinion.

Just found this on Youtube... folks here have mentioned 'And Justice For All' as a Metallica album they liked... not a favourite of mine due to the lack of bass.  Some genius remixed the album with the bass turned up to a proper level.  Whole album WITH bass here... granted, it's more obvious on some tracks more than others but when you hear the difference, you REALLY hear it...

And if you're into a story about how the original mix was so shitty, here's an interview with the guy who the mixed the album... yes, it's another story about what an asshole Lars can be...
