New (musical) discoveries
« on: March 08, 2024, 09:28:38 AM »
Yes, it has become quite rare, but every now and then I still discover a new band or musician.

Well "new" isn't always exactly right - "new to me" is probably a better way to describe it.

For me, Frank Turner is one of these new discoveries. I often find myself listening to a German Radio station, Radio Bob, they play all kinds of rock music, old and new - and they also play New Model Army quite a bit as well, btw.  ;)

Frank Turner is another artist who gets played quite a lot and at some point I realised I quite liked his music. Still took me some time to investigate a little further - and I'm not done yet - but I'm very happy to have found something new to listen to.

So, is this still happening to you guys as well...and if so, what's this new "infatuation"? Doesn't have to be music-related, obviously  :)

I must admit that I sometimes have trouble getting out of my "comfort zone" and that I therefore tend to listen and re-listen to artists that I loved in my youth like NMA, Thin Lizzy, Jane's Addiction, John Campbell, artists that I discovered when I was a teenager, in the mid 90s! But that changed a little with the arrival of COVID in 2020, with the months of lockdown I listened to a lot of music, more than usual, and I was looking for bands with beautiful female voices in particular and so I discovered various and more or less “new” talented Blues/Folk/Country/Indie Rock artists like Samantha Fish, Johnette Napolitano/Concrete Blonde, Molly Tuttle, Anneke Van Giersbergen/Larkin Poe, etc. But my two biggest musical "shocks" in the last four years have been the 80s new wave/cold wave band The Sound, the voice of singer Adrian Borland was very beautiful and heartbreaking and moved me quite a bit (I recommend absolutely the electrifying live IN THE HOTHOUSE and the album FROM THE LION'S MOUTH, at least) and the US Indie Rock/Pop/Electro artist Meg Myers, whose voice and music I find equally beautiful and touching, I like the raw emotional intensity of this artist, particularly in her concerts and acoustic sessions.

Here are the threads/topics i've started about them, if you are curious to dig in their songs!:

I've found so much new music via netradio channels.
We purchased a brand new Yamaha home stereo setup. It has a way many options integrated to link to. There are f.e. over 4000 netradio channels all over the world I could browse freely to. We bought the Yamaha stereo 5-6 years ago and some of our certain favourite channels have brought so much interesting music & fun. We are still listening to it every day. I definately recommend to you to get a similar type of a system.

On the other hand I quite keenly create playlists on streaming services. My recent interests have focused on central and eastern European punk, coldwave & oi! outfits from late 70's to this day in Germany, France, Czech, Poland, ex-Yugoslavia etc. There are some really, really good stuff, especially 80's to 90's stuff.

I have absolutely no interest in finding new music. Some of my friends / fellow music enthusiasts have a problem with that and feel sorry for me like I am missing out on experiencing their newly discovered great band. I have always found when someone insists I listen to "this new great song / band", I never like it, almost like a defence mechanism as it was not something I found for myself. At the end of the day, there is a portion of a person's brain that listens to and absolutely loves music, and I am happy enjoying the bands I already know and love, NMA being the biggest part of that, and as such, I am not missing out, not enjoying the "the best new alternative band since, whatever", as I am getting all the pleasure I need from 70's punk, new wave, grunge, Brit pop, etc that I need. Familiar favorite songs / bands are comfortable. It's nice that you know the tune, the lyrics, how you sing along or dance to it. Maybe I am getting too old to feel the need to experience new stuff. It is my birthday today after all !

It is? Well, in this case: A VERY HAPPY  BELATED BIRTHDAY TO YOU!  :) Hope you had a great day!

And as for new music - I can totally relate - in my case, my "new" discoveries often end up being artists that have already been around for a while. Music that is actually new new usually doesn't do it for me, either. I may like it - but it just doesn't really get me hooked anymore.

HAH - so Frank Turner seems to be another one of these musicians who like being on tour - and in October he's playing the same venue in Oberhausen (pretty close to where I live) as NMA have just been at - very nice indee.  :D

If you haven't seen Frank Turner live, you absolutely need to go! It's a total blast!!! He usually calls his tours "The neverending tour of everywhere" which is quite true, as he is basically constantly on the road.

I too discovered him through Radio Bob a few years ago and have been a fan ever since. My love for New Model Army is only met by my love for Frank Turner. I even had the pleasure to attend a small concert with him in the Radio Bob studios a few weeks ago. There were only 100 guests and you could only win the tickets on the radio. One embarassing chat with the DJs live on air later and my wife and I were able to go see him.

And he's such a nice guy, too. Super friendly and approachable. He took the time and gave autographs and took pictures with everybody after the show. Probably one of the best nights I spent in recent years.

Now he just needs to tour with New Model Army!  :)

Whaaat?! You got to go to the Radio Bob concert?! I am seriously jealous now - that must have been awesome!!!

I, too, discovered him through Radio Bob - dunno...always liked the songs whenever they got played - and then thought how I really need to check out more of his stuff - and now I am indeed in awe.

Tickets for his show in Oberhausen have already been ordered - can't wait!

It was totally awesome indeed.  8) Similar to Justin, Frank Turner only needs an acoustic guitar to entertain the audience and deliver a stunning performance.

Unfortunately, you don't seem to be able to send attachments through DMs, otherwise I would have sent you a video of the gig.  :)

You won't regret going to Oberhausen. I am still waiting for him to come a bit closer to where I live. Enjoy!

I've been listening lately to a new wave of Oi! stuff that resembles a bit of cold wave and gothic/post punk genres. It's been called "cold oi" at times. Many of these bands are French.

Rancoeur
Prisonnier du Temps
Oi Boys
Tchernobyl/Force Majeure
Diät

On the other hand there are also other new & interesting cold wave artists in general like Ploho, Holograms etc.

I'm sure many who have been to the recent tour will have been impressed with Amy Montgomery. She's one I'll be keeping an eye out for.
Hala (from the Anglo-Saxon word "halh", meaning nook or remote valley), until it was gifted by King Henry II to Welsh Prince David Owen and became known as Halas Owen
