I'll tell you pisses me off,,,

I have always been pleased to be the last man standing, the only person you will meet in the modern world who does not own a mobile phone. Well, I have finally had to cave in. My poor dear wife is fed-up with me asking her to look at her phone to confirm this code, or that application for me.You cannot exist without one, ffs, so today I ordered a bogger. Not happy about it. I hate the little buggers. To think the telephone was invented so people could talk to each other. Now, it is the biggest conversation killer ever. You can see families / couples sitting in a restaurant, not talking, but looking down at a glass rectangle in their hand. Now I will have to carry around and maintain this device, feed it with electricity, like a pet in your pocket, ready to get lost or nicked at a moment's notice. Not a big fan of the modern world. That said, I said all that shit on a laptop talking to yooz who I never would have known without modern technology !!
The longer this century goes on, the more I feel I belong in the last one.

Kinda scary how ubiquitous phones have become, how removed from each other they makes us and (tinfoil hat time) how dangerous the tech could become......

But at the same time it has given so much access to the big wide world and all its knowledge let alone ability to communicate/share .

Certainly a double edged sword but i still think Gigabyte Wars pretty much said it all.

Getting knocked back for promotion at work today. Considering my options, including trying some things to cause havoc with the AI bots that are so widely used for assessing CVs on job applications now...

That's a pity...A sudden rejection and you're left with "..daydreams of revenge.." and i can totally understand that. Two things: First, i would be interested in your strategy to cause some havoc and would like to hear your sophisticted plan using those AI bots..sounds elaborate and technical..but i would totally not advise you to do it..here online..leave no traces! ;-) And the second thing is, yeah i've been there many times, planing and thinking about revenge, but i just know that acting on it is not a good thing. If i could give some advise, i would just be the most polite and friendly person and write maybe an email to that person in charge of that descision, be very open about it how i feel, but with no accusations and just make them answer your question. Like "ok, i get it , you just knocked me back from my deserved promotion and i think this is not right, so please just explain to me why you did that, considering that is is an unfair and bad descision only serving your goals nad leaving me totally out of that equasion" Something like that, i don't know..just wanted to say that i'm sorry for you...straight on for the days ahead!..

Thanks - I know my performance in the promotion interview wasn't me at my best, and I have been given feedback but I do think there other factors in play. I went for it because a colleague was also going for it, but didn't want to make the jump alone, so to speak so I agreed to put myself forward too. The way it works with my particular role in my employer is that you get moved out of your team if promoted, which means backfilling and I've a strong suspicion there's only budget for one new employee, not two. Like I said, I'm considering what's best for me now, staying where I am and doing what I do well without going over and above, or trying for something new which is where seeing if I can mess with the "AI" agents now used to sift CVs comes in.I'm not intending anything malicious, just seeing if I can get them to recommend me for interview though if it does work, the implications are serious - black hat hackers will also be trying the same approaches, but they'll be trying to do damage, gain system access and  steal data, and who's going to take the blame, the companies using these half-baked tools or the companies selling them?

On a more positive note, I'm in the state of mind I found after coming out of serious depression about ten years back - I'm not falling, I'm flying...

Winterwolf, how you're doing? Today i quit officially my work. I told them before i was going to, but they didn't believe me. Now they play the "how can you step away from your responsibilitys"-card, and it's not that easy for me i can say, but i feel it is the right decision for me, though i really don't know what awaits me next..let's go! straight on for the days ahead..

Good on you for trusting yourself and walking away, hope you find a new job soon that you're happier with. I'm preparing a job application myself, a former manager of mine reposted a job advert from his employer on Linkedin last week, which I'm experienced enough to go for, would likely be working with a number of former colleagues again and would get a significant pay rise if I got it.

That sounds very promising, wishing you the best! In my case it's a strange situation, 'cause i knew i was gonna leave because of my boss/almost friend got fired and i made some remarks i was about to. On the same day i heard of the situation, my free day, i directly applied to a new job and 3 hours later got an invite to an interview and now i have the contract here, so i can start in march. So today i got the information, that that guy, let's call him the over-boss, he's a boss of the region, is coming tomorrow in our house and i'm curious if he will want to have a talk. My demands for a pay raise will be enormous, so i think i will have a new job in march;-)

That sounds "interesting", and a good way to find out what your actual value is to your present employer. Sounds like you've already made your mind up though, so good luck with the new job!

Yesterday was my last day on the job. The big boss didn't show up, but i got a call later when i had some days off last week from my new boss and she tried to convince me not to go. She asked then what i want and i told her. Ok, when i said i will ask for an enormous raise it isn't really that enormous. My wage consists of two parts, the nomal wage as a chef plus a bonus for my position as kitchen manager. And i the asked for the wage i will have as a chef in my new employment plus that bonus. She said she will do everything to get that through, so i still waited for that descision and felt i also had to communicate that delay of signing the contract to my new employer, they showed understanding and finally i had a talk with her and she offered me a raise, but not enough. A little higher from that i will have, but not enough for that position. And that shows the value the big, huge company is giving to their employes of that profession.

But that's a general problem of being a chef, at least in germany. I find it to be the most underrated profession moneywise and all the good chefs i encountered in my almost 15years of working in that field are driven by passion and exploiting themselves to get the job done.

I think it's the case in a lot of places that good chefs are undervalued, people think that it's not a difficult job because they can cook at home, but they have no idea how different (and difficult) it is preparing and cooking a lot of different dishes for a lot of people all at once! Hope everything works out fine for you in the new job.
