Beatles vs Stones..?
« on: December 07, 2014, 07:47:30 PM »
Where do you beautiful lot stand on this one?

For me, gotta be The Beatles... they were only together for about nine years but they changed music forever.  The journey from the basic-beat stuff to the truly mental shit on their later albums... no band, not ever, has done anything remotely approaching that.

Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of Stones stuff too... Gimme Shelter, Sympathy For The Devil, Wild Horses, Angie, Start Me Up... phenomenal tracks.  But they've dragged it out to stupid levels and become a joke band who demand huge ticket prices when they've already got more money than God and have no respect for bands that respect them... see Carter USM and The Verve...

Your opinion..?  :(

Not a massive fan of either, but for me the stones win it hands down they definitely have the better tunes. I've never understood the whole Beatles thing. Agreed that the stones have lost the plot and it was disgusting what they done to the verve etc. I always used to say that music started with punk in 76/77 but i do like a few older things.
Ps I don't like Bowie either lol

Hard one for me; In their heyday I'd have said the Stones, but they've been peddling some pretty ropey tack since Some Girls, and as mentioned above they're a bit of a joke now - huge stages, horn sections, 23 musicians in the backing band, no bass player etc etc.

I think the Beatles' legacy has been much better looked after and much less much less mucked around with.  Also I think the music sounds less hackneyed and somehow fresher than the majority of the Stones stuff.

That said, Sticky Fingers.... If Carsberg made smack-albums....

Well it's Beatles if I had to choose. Listened to them a lot when 10 years old brat.

I agree The Stones have done some quite great songs when they started until the Start Me Up. But I admit their arrogance toward other bands is somewhat idiotical. When I read the book about Blackmore (Black Knight), there was a gig where they played as a support to Rolling Stones. Deep Purple had just started couple of years earlier so they were a new band. The gig organiser or some people came to give advice to DP lads that they surely wanted to hear what the Stones guys think about them (guess what, they didn't like them). Ha, DP told them to f"*k off as they were not interested in what the Stones were doing.  :)

Easy one for me - The Beatles  :)

Apart from the odd song like "Paint it Black", never really got into the Stones

If you read the writing credits of 'Bittersweet Symphony' by The Verve, it will say 'written by Jagger / Richards'... just because a sample from (I think) 'The Last Time' was used.  Those two multi-millionaires demanded 100% of the credit from the real writers of the song just for that.  They also demanded 100% of the publishing credit for 'After The Watershed' by Carter USM just because they used the three words 'goodbye ruby tuesday' in the chorus, despite The Stones having nothing to do with the track... which is why that song got cut from Carters third album...

Horrible, money-grabbing pricks who haven't released anything decent since 1980 and still take the piss out of bands and fans in the name of even more ££££s...  >:(

Channel 3 covered the Stones song Stupid Girl. It's second track on their album. Wonder what ever happened to them due that horrible crime.

Awesome track.

well both are slightly overrated.  :) The Beatles is said to be the best band of all time and the Stones a close second. I do not think this is the case. I actually like qualities of both.

The Rolling Stones are more raw and bluesy. They have some wonderful songs. I think the best is Paint it black by miles. I also like Under my thumb, As tears go by, 19th Nervous breakdown, Street Fighting Man.These are very solid songs.  :)

However the Beatles have some wonderful songs as well. Especially when they are written by Lennon Or Harrison. They were brilliant song writers. They have written a few of the best songs written in that time Period.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps is genius. Nowhere Man, Fool on the Hill, Revolution, Here Comes the Sun, Eleanor Rigby. All solid songs.
Then there are song such as "I want to hold your hand" or "She loves you" which have lyrics that could have been written by an 11 year old. ;D
Then songs that were clearly written while on drugs that make little sense when you think about them.
"I am the Walrus" was regarded as one of their best songs but it makes not sense at all. Just reading the lyrics can make one go WTF?  ???

For me I would say "The Beatles" win but only because they were around for such a short period of time and covered more genres.  Not to mention Lennon was a better lyricists than Jagger with the acceptation of "I am the Walrus" of course. Plus who doesn't like to song along to Beatles songs while driving in their cars alone or with a group of people.  I used to love that "The Beatles rock band game"  :D

Stones

Beatles always bored me and I never quite got what the fuss was all about. I'm with Alf Garnett: "Scouse Git" plus McCartney does that awful double thumbs up think - dickhead  ;D

Stones
The early years `til 1975 - more blues

Have some singles of both bands (thanks to my elder brother), but not one beatles lp, knowing most of the songs I never felt the need to buy them ...

Paint it black, Gimme shelter, Satisfaction
or
the film One+One (Jean-Luc Godard) with Sympathy of the devil
