After three listens an equal tie between "Burn the Castle", "Devil", and "Born Feral"
-
Yer flash Harry bugger you ;D ;D
-
Thanks Anna. Love you to babe.
After numerous listens, "Eyes get used to the darkness" is becoming a front runner :)
-
Still didn't receive it... damn, The Store usually gets a new release through my letterbox on the day of release, if not sooner... if it doesn't show up tomorrow, I gues I'll have to wait until Tuesday, thanks to the bank holiday... >:(
-
Burn the castle, eyes get used to the darkness and beginning the standouts on first listens but NMA albums tend to reveal "hidden gems" which makes them so good, its quite a new direction with so much distorted bass, saturated guitars and feedback, really punk in places, even reminds me of the marychain and BMRC!
-
"Born feral" is probably my favourite, i really like the drum part, wandering at the end...quite hypnotic. I have a few issues with this album but Michael Dean is a so good drummer!!! And Ceri Monger is doing again a fine job on bass. "Strogoula", "Winter", "Burn the castle", "Die trying" not too far behind "Born feral". "Echo November" "Weak and strong" and "After something" are also decent songs.
-
Born Feral !!! :D
and a lot more , great album ! :)
-
Dunno, no copies at gig yesterday - some red tape nonsense about leaving UK on 25th apparently and local media markt doing a stocktake so no deliveries :'( Still, live tracks sounded fracking good ;D
-
On my sixth listen right now, back to back listens, and it's gotta be 'Eyes Get Used To The Darkness' right now...
This could change by the twelfth listen... 'Drifts', 'Echo November' and 'Devil' are tickling the toes of the aforementioned track... :(
-
Struggling to pick 1 but Burn The Castle, Born Feral and Echo November are up there at the minute
-
Burn The Castle, Die Trying and Winter, I fully expect this to change over the coming weeks.
-
Born feral is the track most stuck in my head at the minute, don't know if that makes it a favourite
-
I received it today. After two listens,i think that Die Trying , Burn the Castle , Born Feral and Echo November are my favourites.
-
At the moment it's Born Feral,Weak and Strong and After Something but as with others it's liable to change.Great album(yet again)
-
Devil. Even if I didn't like it the first few times I heard it. Eyes get used to the darkness and born feral are great as well.
-
Devil, Die Trying and in contrast to others Beginning. Winter is growing after a listening on my headphones.
-
Eyes get used to the Darkness is my favourite at the moment but there are quite a few that I really like and it will probably keep changing.
-
I think I'm gonna reserve any further opinion as to my favourite tracks until the live dates, when I'm hoping that a good big chunk of this excellent new album is presented to us in a live environment...
So many tracks on previous albums have sounded good to me on the CD... but I truly grew to love them after hearing them live. 'Knieval', for example...

I think Die Trying sounded better live. Not that its bad on the album. Just better raw.
-
My most favorite from the new album will be propably: Burn The Castle, Eyes Get Used to the Darkness, Drifts, Devil. Probably it will change after few listenings.
-
Beginning, followed by Die Trying and Devil
however, I imagine this will change over time. It usually does!
-
Born Feral is definitely a grower.
-
wow, I am surprised to see I am not alone in this...Burn the Castle will be awesome to experience live; Born Feral is my personal fav...and I really like Strogoula...but what a nice album from start to finish; After Something is so gentle and is well placed to make this album feel complete.
-
Part the Water
-
Burn the Castle - great pit track
-
Beginning really starting to grow on me , definitely want to hear it live to take in the full power of song
-
Agreed, Pol,wasn't a favourite upon the first few listens, but it's really grown on me...
-
At the minute Strogoula is hitting me. Still bloody impressed by this album
-
Beginning is a grower! Agreed ;)
Here's an acoustic version back from 2014:

I totally love this version in all its understated beauty and I was really hoping for it to be included on Winter in this stripped down form, kinda like 'These Words'. It took a bit to accept the much heavier album version but I love them both now.

Gotta say, much as I enjoyed hearing JS play this solo at Kidderminster or Hebden Bridge think the album version is killer:love it 8), definately a favourite at the moment but running close with Eyes Get Used To The Darkness

Devil
I have been listening to it for about 2 hours, it makes me so angry....i don't know why. The hotel room i am staying in is absolutely trashed because i have been dancing in my own little pit. I will apologize in advance if someone happens to bump into me when this is played live!
-
Born Feral is a tune and a half. Love Drifts too. Lots of touching and thought-provoking lyrics on this record, and some really beautiful musical pieces. So far - wonderful
-

Okaaayyyy....
*backs slowly away, trying not to make eye contact or make any loud noises / sudden movements...*
;D

Note to self stay away from matt when devil is played lol
-
Haven't listened to anything else for a full week now - love the variety and sheer adventure of this.
Having been a fan for over 30 years, I think Winter and BDAW are probably the two most interesting 'full' albums, back-to-back, that they've produced for various reasons. I fully admit to thinking such was an impossibility at this stage in their career and with such a fantastic history which had already set the standard high. Is it because of 'fresh blood', Justin's constant evolution as a songwriter and musician or simply the 'perception', or otherwise, that they are going from strength to strength. Whatever it is, it is magnificent - both on stage and in the studio.
Born Feral is simply a mesmerising masterpiece which stops you progressing to Die Trying, because you keep going back for more and more. In fact, I must have listened to it about 20 times in a row before I ventured further. The only other songs that did something similar to me back in the day were No Rest, Here Comes the War and Headlights.
Other standouts from the very first listening are, well, quite simply, the rest of the album minus Beginning, although it has certainly grown on me since.
This album gives hope to us all - there certainly is life after 50! ;)
-
I'm completely obsessed with Born Feral. Wow. Devil is great, Die Trying, Winter, and I'm sure the rest will continue growing on me.
-
Does anyone else really like "After Something" ?
I love it. Look forward to it as the album gets towards the end. Perfect mix of acoustic and electric guitar. Pleasant easy going tune. Love the lyrics. Although at the beginning it mentions kicking snow from boots, for some reason it paints a clear picture of Summer in my mind and the love of travelling. Must be the "sleeping in the long grass" line, you wouldn't want to do that in the snow !
Great end to a great album
-
Yes Shush I really like After Something too. My favourite on the whole record. The second half of the album all just kind of builds up to this song, like a crescendo of pure emotion. Absolutely love it...

I third that. Part the Waters too also and Weak and Strong. the three best moments of the album for me.
-
Right Now Echo November was the 1st song I had to hit the replay button on. A very Kick A** NMA jam ;D 8)
-
winter, for me...
"...through a wilderness of plenty..."
shivers, every time.
the lyrics feel like someone read my mind.
-
I love them all, but am finding that, when not listening to the album, Drift and Stragoula are the ones I find myself humming/singing at work/in the shower
-
Eyes Get Used to the Darkness, Drifts and Born Feral ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
-
Eyes get used to the Darkness and Winter are vying for attention going round my head. And like Shush I like After Something. But for me Beginning is still the stand out track. It's like an Enormous slab of sound and emotion. Reminds me of Carlisle Road (another fave of mine) in a strange way.
-
Definitely Die Trying. :)
I was listening to the album the evening when I got my hands on it and thought, yeah! GOOD ALBUM. And then Die Trying startet and I went back and listened to it again and again... at the end of the evening I had played it about 30 times. It just hit me, such a wonderful song. Actually the only song I know all the words by now. 8) And I'm so happy they played it live at all the shows I went to yet.
But I also love the live performance of BORN FERAL a lot.
-
Just watched the video of Drifts. I'm a way surprised and imagining about seeing it live; what would it be, how would they sound etc. Think about Ceri performing the bass on it. That's an ever-mysterious favourite band putting out new material year after years... Astounding.
Cheers!
-
I have to say that after many, many listens, 'Drifts' is, ahem, drifting to the top of the charts...

Wow, cool MR. Cheers, mate! :)
-
Hey - Rusco Drifted back here :)
-
Nice to see your name on here again after a long break Rusco. Ceri's Bass on Drifts is wonderful, just like the intro to Echo November.

I love also to hear you lots here. I've been a way too busy recently. Planned to do some of the gigs on October or November somewhere in midst of europe but now have cancelled it all. It's a pity, but the reason is all the renovations. ;) Well, when you talk about things concerned with bands you love so much as the NMA, there's always another chance - or???. (There's actually no one other like them.) Let's have a look at another odd event in future!
Cheers!
-
That sounds promising Rusco. Next year maybe . :)
-
The album's three first songs are fantastic. Beginning is a very strong song to start with, it sounded a bit akward by the way Justin sang but at the same time it was a right on and it really goes to an amazing climax! In the beginning there was... everything ;)
-
Loving the album, but has anyone else noticed how much musically (in parts) Die Trying sounds like Higher Wall & Weak and Strong like Orange Tree Roads?
But back to the question - Eyes Get Used to The Darkness is doing it for me presently....
-
Surprised at lack of mentions for Strogoula. For me the impact song of the album, like Dawn was on High. Really strong song that takes me on a voyage of thought. Love it.
-
Each week my favourite changes this week its_eyes get used to the darkness😁
-
'Winter'
-
Today my favourite seems to be. _ after something :)
-
First time last night seeing some of the songs played live and they did sound great. I cannot remember a tour where so many of the songs from the new album went into the set list straight away, it felt like half of the album was played and all went down really well. It's just a great album. Current favourite is weak and strong but it changes regularly - would be good if this was in the live set too I think as it was on the continent.

It's the album's best song with "Born feral" i think. ;)
-
Immediatly "Born Feral" was my fav one...with time "Die Trying" could change that...
-
Actually, after seeing it live, the title track has jumped up to number one in my favourite list... so much more intense in a live setting.
-
Saying hello again after a long silence. the records been waiting at my local record shop (20 miles away) for a month while Leonard Cohen's folk got their act together on releasing his.
So Today I just took a trip to Preston and bought Cohen, Bad seeds and this...this was the first one on...what a great record..
Just about to flip to side four but what a great record
No faves yet obviously..ok, fave so far is the first track...there were some especially moving words there for me. Apt to me now .
-
FIVE listens last night! FIVE!
What a record...I don't like it when I like a record so immediately. But puzow...that's a great record.
-

Sounded so good, didn't it?
-
Eyes Get Used To The Darkness, Die Trying and Weak and the Strong for me.
-
Beginning and Part the Waters!
I love the way Justin sings at times in a loud and angry way in Burn the Castle. Sounds like he nearly spits on face or growls. Cool!
-
So far it appears to be "die trying". I can't get it out of my head.
-
After seeing quite a few of the live gigs my favourite has to be Born Feral but as this is one of the strongest albums for a while there's not a weak track at all.
Devil and Drifts live are also excellent
-
Die Tryin, Weak and Strong
-
A song I hated on first hearing and now love, The very...Devil :)
Die Tryin, Weak and Strong
