Travel tips - What do we need to see in Bradford?
« on: November 04, 2013, 02:57:46 PM »
Hey everyone, we're trying to find a few things that we "need" to see while visiting Bradford next week.  NMA-related things would be fantastic (obviously), but architecture, history etc. is always interesting as well.  Basically, we'd love to see what makes Bradford.... Bradford.

We'll be there Sunday the 10th and part of Monday the 11th before heading up to Aberdeen for the start of the UK tour.

Thanks!!

I've heard good things about this place

http://www.prashad.co.uk

The phrase mouthgasm is what I've heard used when describing it. Sadly I've been trying to go there for several years now but circumstances have always conspired against me.

Let me know what you think if you manage to get there.

Cheers

We went to Prashad in the summer and were distinctly underwhelmed. Expensive and adequate. Had MUCH better Bradford curries. Ask John and Sharon for recommendations, they always take us to great places.

I have a rough list, well two. One by car and the city centre on foot mate! Tomora night a PM will wing it's way to you. I need to remember the order I did the Magical Memory Tour in Hometown last year. everyone seemed to love it so much.  8)

I'd second Pete's recommendation of the Sparrow. A really welcoming temple to good beer. My Mum lives in Bradford and I live in Cornwall and I'm sure the Sparrow is one of the reasons she sees me as often as she does! (I hope she doesn't read this forum). I'm new to the forum too so hello all. Falmouth is also a hotbed of fantastic ale houses bizarrely so if the few of you who are braving the wild West need any tips, just ask.

For something more traditionally touristy, The National Media Museum is worth a visit.

And I second the recommendation for the place with table-sized naans. I think you win a prize if you eat one all by yourself...

See you in Aberdeen! ;-)

train bus or car to Shipley, eat at Aagrah if you want a decent curry; while you're in the area, Baildon Moor & Shipley Glen can be done on the same trip. do the moor & glen in daylight, then Aagrah to replace those calories burnt on a good walk.

National Media Museum

a show at the Alhambra if there's anything on that grabs your fancy

some great Victorian architecture despite more recent attempts to "modernise" it e.g. The Wool Exchange; City Hall - statues of all the kings & queens of England from William I to Victoria around the building about 1 or two floors up; the wool merchants' warehouses in Little Germany. And of course, "the hole" (an urban 'park' ie a bit of grass and some pathways) where a fancy new shopping mall might, just might, one day be built.

If you like your football (soccer) then Bradford City's ground (traditional name "Valley Parade", current sponsored name is IIRC "The Coral Windows Stadium") is a short walk from the city centre up Manningham Lane. Pretty visible from most parts of the city. No games on this weekend unfortunately, they're away at Rotherham in the FA Cup

out of season for Rugby League, no Union to speak of up here

but if you want to do shopping you'll probably have to go to Leeds ;-)

I sent Brian an extensive list on "the other place" on Thursday, hopefully he's had a good day round hometown today. The weather has been ideal for sight seing! Sadly work preventnted me from being guide in person...... =(

Waterstones book shop is worth visiting - not least because it's on Hustlergate  :)
