Twinkle - "le jouet" (french electro-industrial stuff)
The Smashing Pumpkins - "mellon collie and the infinite sadness" (in my "top ten", NMA is the 1st, but the Pumpkins are not very far behind -- the fact is that from a philosophical point of view, I don't feel as close to them as to NMA...)
Well I met my wife at a Smashing Pumpkins gig at Edwards No.8 in Birmingham in Feb 1992....Great!! :)
The Love of Hopeless Causes - such an underrated masterpiece!I completely agree...

There`s a rockpalast cd/dvd: Michael Schenker Group - Hard Rock Legends Vol. 2 ;)I have a bootleg DVD of a couple of MSG Rockpalast shows. One from 81 and another from the 90's I think. Sir, you are NEVER too old to listen to heavy stuff! What, you get to 'a certain age' and it's all supposed to be about whatever acoustic-y stuff is trendy amongst Radio 2 listeners? Over the last week, I've been listening to Sepultura, Pantera, Junker and Fear Factory; I love to listen to music with guts. I like all sorts of other things too, but I'll always love the sound of the guitar.
I'd send them to bed with no dinner. ;) ;)

Not at all :) Sometimes the reason something gets played all the time and sells by the shedload is that its genuinely very good, and that's a very fine example....
This morning: Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medecine - the 'White People and the Damage Done' album (arguably as far away from Air as you can musically get!)
Echo & the Bunnymen - Bring on the Dancing Horses. 8)

Wishbone Ash - King will come
I might get some disdain for this, but I've been listening to a bit of early Queen stuff lately, listening to 'Queen 2' at the moment... they went a bit poppy in the 80's, but the early tracks are pretty decent rock songs...some really good tracks on first two albums - keep yourself alive (blinding track), greart king rat, seven seas of rhye, father to son are what i can remember without looking - also sheer heart attack album, now i'm here

Just got hold of the extended version of FIRST AND LAST AND ALWAYS by The Sisters Of Mercy...
I think I've said this before on this forum and 'stop me if you've heard this one before' (as Morrissey once said) but The Sisters usually get thrown in with the Goth movement, but I think this one is far more influenced by the likes of Joy Division... a bloody great album.

I used to love the Sisters of Mercy. I had a couple of albums and around five EP's/ 12" singles. I lent them to a girl I was pursuing at the time and have never seen them since. That was in 1987... should I track her down and ask for them back? ::)
I just found some CD complilation of movie themes, can't remember where I found it (I think it was free with a magaz ine) but it has the original themes from HALLOWEEN, TAXI DRIVER, ASSAULT ON PRECIENT 13, THE TERMINATOR, THE UNTOUCHABLES, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, THE THING and a few others...

Australia....figures! I'll visit the UK to see NMA but Australia is out of the question.
Yes I have The cave comes alive. Volatile and Beethovens Fist. As to what happen to them if you go to Youtube you will actually see some recent live gig footage from 2009 and some newer.
From what I heard after Beethovens Fist they broke up but now it seems they play an occasional gig here and there but just in their homeland Australia. 8)

Howdy Master Ray. I have been listening to FF since the Mid 90's I have tried getting into the last 2 albums by them and to me there is something lacking It's like they are just going thru the motions when I got Obsolete That was their crowning achievement then Digimortal that was when the band was at it's best the singer had that ability to change his voice from growling madman to Avenging Archangel in a blink which is a rare in a singer I love that about this band. Now the new stuff I just have not found that groove that got me hooked the 1st time yet in the new stuff 8)
Alien Sex Fiend - Ignore The Machine. 8)
Agreed. Never been a fan of covers in general, but love both versions :)

never listened to it. i have every piece of vinyl up to scary monsters (super creeps) and then just modern love 12' single, pink. after that i actually gave up. i
That's what I like about seeing NMA. They always seem to play the "just the right size" venue to make it a good night.
Lana Del Ray - Born To Die...
I heard one single, didn't like it much but I heard some good things so gave it a go... quite liking it. Sort of a chillout album. Kinda of David Lynch soundtrack stuff with a bit of lush orchestration and hip-hop beats going on in the background... ???
[...] I'm sure I like a lot of things other people can't stand.
Me, I'm listening to Kate Miller-Heidke's wonderful album "Nightflight".
Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power.
'Hollow' is such a brilliant song...
Mansun, the SIX album... a brilliant album, but commercial suicide in the musical wilderness that was 1998...

Mountain - Nantucket Sleigh Ride. 8)
Just listened to them from Youtube. Great, I liked it. Reminds a bit about early Blackfoot, Hawkwind etc.
I had once a friend who was very much into Mountain and he used to talk about them once in a while, but I never really didn't take a closer look at the band. Although I used to listen to those OLD hard rock classics quite a lot in eighties at some time too.

Something changed - Pulp
Mr Bowie's first TIN MACHINE album... a sort of side project that got a lot of shit back in the day but, in retrospect, a **** of a lot better than much of the stuff he did in the 80's (Scary Monsters, Absolute Beginners and the songs from Labyrinth aside...)That first album was amazing. It was so not Bowie. I loved the UTG video clip back then :)
The rest of the Tin Machine stuff was utter arsebobbins, though... :(

To be fair, Witch, it took 'em five or six years to come up with a second act... it just annoys me that there is no movement / publicity / feedback on a third... seems like they took the money and run.

Well Ray Afterburner and the Tour I went to was in 2002. So if you want something Newer I would start with Snakes & Arrows from 2006 - 2007 I went to that Tour and that Album has the old Rush Feel . I went to the Time Machine Tour in 2010 where they played Signals in it's entirety . I was not a big fan of the Clockwork Angels album and Tour but they have some great concert footage of that album and tour on Youtube. 8)

Didn't know they had a new one out, Ron, how's it sounding?
Bit disappointed with more recent stuff, but loved them back in the day, saw 'em a few times live, always excellent. I've heard that Burton's voice is a bit knackered nowadays. You seen 'em live recently and, if so, is that the case? Wouldn't mind seeing them again...

rum, sodomy and the lash awaits....
Just to annoy Anna,
Delving deep into the new Iron Maiden album... rather complex, someone 'Maiden re-hashed' in places but still an enjoyable (and long) listen...
I hear it got to No 1 in 24 countries. Not bad for a band pushing 40 years on the go...
My friends prefer Priests and not Maiden
I`m not into it very deep and can`t vote for this or that ...
Not shure if it was a bad or a good idea to buy some Manowar tickets for one of the next gigs in germany (but they can`t be that total worse than Priest or Maiden ;) to be on the road with friends ...
Manowar - one of my nieces asked me (her partner is a huge fan - how can we do it to be there), so I try my very best ...

Good evening @ allHope you've had a great trip x
after a 5 days travel starts on Monday finished one hour ago today ( from Germany to Bradford then from Bradford to the Middle of England and same way back ) lots of NMA songs on our journey started back home at 7 in the morning with car-tram -choach-taxi 2 times flight and own car back during the flight I was listening to flying through the smoke very much :)

Excellent album. I'm sure you'v heard Bowies new one, 'Blackstar' (title track from his new album, out in January)... but just in case you haven't...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kszLwBaC4Sw
Looking forward to it, sounds a lot more experimental than 'The Next Day' (which I loved!), kind of more like his Berlin albums... 'The Lodger' in particular is, I think, rather under-rated...
I must start a Bowie thread one of these days... ;)

Ron... I have to say I never got into FOTN despite similar bands of that loose genre and time period being faves of mine... at the Nottingham aftershow, a track of theirs was played (can't remember the name) but it sounded right up my street... so, where to start?
Think they might be something to investigate in 2016...

Master Ray that one is a very hard question since most of their music and what some would consider their best work is so old so I would start with their Album Dawnrazor which was the 1st Cd I brought from this Band way back in the late 80's and just go from there . Plenty of Video and audio of this band on Youtube.

Certainly better than anything that came out during that whole Blur vs Oasis, media wankery, 'dicks-out, let's see whose biggest' bollocks. Superb band.

The new Radiohead single, Burn The Witch... f-ing hell, I can't be doing with Radiohead nowadays, loved them in the 90's (as I've said before), but this one is just another bunch of dreary shit aimed at hipsters who think that a decent tune is 'not cool, man'...Its marginally better than some, nay virtually all of the later stuff but jeees.....somebody smash the synthesisers and take the guitars back out the cases and gives us something akin to Pablo Honey or The Bends and not bloody jazz/arty synth monotony.
And a video referencing 'Camberwick Green' doesn't make it any better.
What the hell, here's the video if any of you are interested... ::)

Saw them live one month ago. Very heavy, fast and energic stuff. Liked them alot! Although Wattie's quite old nowadays he did the gig very well.
Just watched Stray Cats Rumble in Brighton (https://youtu.be/y5fPntjfVr8) 1981 Rockpalast gig.
Rammstein are awesome live, saw them the last time they played Manchester Arena, was about fifty feet away from the main stage and the immense pyrotechnics had me sweating like crazy...I saw Rammstein at Download last week; they are a band I don't know at all. T'was a great stage show, but I like to sing along and I don't know German (although I did pick up "Jah, nein, Rammstein" :) )

On a bit of a PiL trip right now, checking out 'This Is What You Want, This Is What You Get' from 1984, never heard it before, great album. 'The Order Of Death', one of my favourite tracks ever, is worth the price of admission alone...Totally agree with you on that one Master Ray, a classic track indeed. I first heard it on a film called Hardware, which was crap, but was notable as it has Lemmy and Fields Of The Nephilim's Carl McCoy in it. Not a big fan of PIL but saw them in Wrexham in May and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you MR.Its always good to have some Carter USM.
You're welcome, B.E.R. Can I ask, did you ever get hold of their final album, 'I Blame The Government'? Rather forgotten and certainly a commercial flop. I only bought it a couple of months ago and there are some excellent songs there, right up there with the 'classics'. Opinion?Yes..I like the album very much.Real drums and class lyrics as always.Man Who Bought The World is my favouritte.Too bad I never saw them live. But to be honest Im not fond of the album as much as others like love album, damnations, post historic and straw donkey. Also Worry bomb

The Sisters Of Mercy - Vision Thing, the entire album for the second time tonight. Going to see them on Sunday in Dortmund and yes, I am getting excited.
Okay, in this very moment: Something Fast
Be sure to let us know about how you felt about the Sisters gig... ;)
@Ray, the Sisters were absolutely amazing. Beautiful version of “Something Fast”, setlist was pretty normal, says my co-worker, a lot from the “Vision Thing” album. I liked that AE was moving a lot and actually took the entire stage for his performance. He was very much in touch with the audience I felt. At some point I thought to myself that he is not talking much, but my co-worker later in the car said he was very talkative, normally he would talk less. I really enjoyed the show. Really, I did!! :)
To stay on topic: a live version of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers “King’s Highway” playing right now here.

Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds - Who Built The Moon? Really liking this one, Mr G's two solo albums were pretty good but relied a bit too much on past glories... this ones quite a bit different, to say the least. December 2009 was the date of the gig. I've a live recording of it but didn't attend, don't remember seeing it advertised otherwise I may have gone. I saw The Twang there in September 2009 and thought it was a good venue especially with it's proximity to Northwich but like a lot of good things, it didn't last.
Top tune... I think The Charlatans are a very under-rated band, they've done several fine albums outside of the period when they were fashionable...
I don't suppose you were there when they played The M Club in Crewe (great venue, now sadly knocked down) a few years ago? Fantastic gig.

On a trip to Brittany back in the Summer, I became aware of a band called Ar Re Yaouank, and this track has been one I've lost count of how many times I've played since. I absolutely love this ! Especially the accordian solo that starts at 2:26 :) Sheer brilliance.Thats a lovely bit of celtic sound going on there. When you mentioned accordion, I thought the atypical French accordion songs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be-XsszZ2yo
Yes, the whole Breton music scene is a really big thing, with a mixture of 'celtic rock' and traditional Breton Celtic music, which has many similarities to traditional Scottish and Irish music. Bagpipes are very common in Breton music for example. But they also have some of their own traditional instruments you don't tend to hear elsewhere, such as bombardes which are the high pitched, slightly harsh sounding pipes which you hear in this track. They have big Breton music festivals over there called "Fest noz". I'd love to go to one of those !On a trip to Brittany back in the Summer, I became aware of a band called Ar Re Yaouank, and this track has been one I've lost count of how many times I've played since. I love the Breton music scene was introduced to it via Alain Stivell by a Breton guy i met over here in Jersey over 40 years ago.........then Alain Simon with his work with Fairport Convention and Dan Ar Bras.As you say some great unusual instruments as well, can be very rocky and atmospheric in equal measures..best enjoyed with gallons of Cidre De Breton...... 8)

Hey Master Ray, I used to love this band. I really liked their early albums, but kind of lost track of them after the Host album, which of course was very different from their earlier stuff. Host was very different from what I expected when I bought it. Bit of a shock, but actually not too bad at all. I believe they have gone back to a much heavier sound since then, but I know nothing about any of their albums post-Host ! Any recommendations ?
Hey, Tony, we're friends seeing as you're on this board, you can call me Ray! ;)
I am a fan of PL since 'Gothic' and I love most of their albums, regardless of what they sounded like. I don't care whether they were 'metal' or not, I just care about the songs and how good they were. And even during their most experimental years, I think there were some excellent songs. I have to admire a band who were breaking big into the worldwide metal scene and thought 'nah... we're not doing that, we'll do an album or two that sounds like Depeche Mode'... ;D
After Host flopped, the guitars came back, by degrees. Believe In Nothing, Symbol Of Life, Paradise Lost and In Reqiuem are a progression of albums that got heavier (but with some very catchy tunes along the way that hark back to the more tuneful keyboard-y stuff before.).
If I could recommend one album to you, it would be the brilliant 'Faith Divides Us, Death Unites Us' from 2009. Heavy, melodic, it's a proper successor to Draconian Times or Icon. Just a great album. After that, go through Tragic Idol, The Plague Within and Medusa, it gets heavier from album to album.
So, to finish this, let me post you a few videos you might enjoy...

Didn't realise you've never heard 'One Second', which is full of fine tracks, one of my favourites from PL. Do yourself a favour and listen to it in full on Youtube, link beneath... you won't regret it, I promise.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC-eGeN5C2U
To be honest, I drifted away from PL for a long while as well, it was 'Faith Divides us, Death Unites Us' that brought me back after a random purchase, bought cheap in a record shop that had me thinking 'Wow, these guys still going? Well, it's a cheap buy, let's see what they sound like these days...' and that was the start of investigating the stuff I'd missed. I enjoyed it all, hope your experience is just the same. :)
Back to the whole idea of 'song you're listening to right now...' well, posting that last comment has made me put 'One Second' on again! ;D

Love that version MR. Marillion without Fish is just not Marillion as far as I'm concerned. Neither of them are as good without the other. I love all the Fish-era Marillion albums. Fugazi is probably my favourite. Never saw them live unfortunately.

Ha! I got into Marillion during the tail end of the 'Clutching at Straws' (still my fave Marillion album) era... really loved what I heard... and Fish left the band about a week later. ::)
I do like an awful lot of the Steve Hogarth era, though... it's very different to the Fish era but there's some fine musicianship on offer (and Mr Hogarth is a fine singer). If you're interested, or unfamiliar with the H era stuff, give 'Brave' a go. It's pretty mellow for the main part but there are some terrific songs here and it's a proper concept album with a story to tell. Let me know how you got on with it!
In fact, posting this comment has made me stick on 'Brave' again!

I will give it a listen. thanks for the recommendation MR. I got into Marillion early, around 'Script' because my best mate's older brother was into them. Never really kept up with much of Fish's output either. Do you follow his music?

Genesis are a band I sometimes like and sometimes hate (in equal measures)... so much crap but the good stuff, when it happens, is VERY good.
ATOTT, Wind And Wuthering, Selling England By The Pound are pretty damn decent albums...
Came across The Hu on believe it or not a Folk/Fairport Convention Forum the song on that site was Yuve,Yuve,Yu ................powerful stuff indeed...Thats a good song too. Both do have a bit of a folky feel to them I guess. And this is where the internet is a good thing, bringing music across the globe.

The Genesis influence is obvious and acknowledged by the band. However, I do like both bands and find them quite different. Kinda like Fields and the Sisters. I can only speak for Fish-era Marillion though.

Love me a bit of Marillion and Fugazi is one of their best albums. How do you feel about the Hogarth years?
Oh, and right now, listening to Iron Maiden, Killers.
Yes sir,I agree with all my heart. It's so sad that such a voice and charismatic vocalist had a career like this.I sometimes watch the Phantom Of The Opera live version and many others,he was great but unfortunately not anymore
I've said it before and I'll say it again... I MUCH prefer Paul Di-Anno to Bruce Dickinson! I like most of Maiden's albums, but Bruce's voice just puts me off somewhat, much of it is just emotionless caterwauling! ;D
Obviously, other opinions are available. ;)
Nice story … I like personal contact to bandmembers … for this reason I love the Hardcore scene … in my hometown we have some people who organized many very good Hardcore gigs in the last years
with bands like Sick of it all, Yuppicide, Walls of Jericho, Ignite, Angelic Upstarts, Dog Eat Dog, Terror and many more … often talked and laughed with the bands. The often play in a very small club placed in a 300 year old house — the stage is on normal level, so you are with the band … it is so personal, just unique … Hardcore community is like a family — just as NMA …
This year — just one gig in februar, than …
I hope, that the club will survive these months of being closed … live music is so important!

Now listening to the new Levelelrs album Peace and also the new album from James Dean Bradfield - Even In Exile
I'd lost the love for the Levellers over recent years as IMHO they seemed to have just plateaued but the new album is definitely rekindled the love

Also on my first listen of JDB's new one and it is, indeed, a fine album. Always loved The Great Western, nice to hear a follow up after only 14 years!
Haven't heard the new Levs yet. I think I've mentioned how I've been somewhat disappointed by their recent 'going through the motions' tours but from what I've heard of the new material then they're back on form. :D

''The Head Of Helier'' by The Head Of Helier........Black Metal (the bands description, not mine)..sung in Jerriais which is the original language of Jersey. The language almost died out but a group of local historians, teachers and musicians are trying to keep it alive it is also being taught in schools which is great. Not really my thing....plus i don't speak the language, but fair play to the band for doing it...... 8)....ps you can listen to the whole album on YouTube....
Brand new album by Fish - Weltschmerz
First listen and I like it :)
The new levellers album … I must buy it soon, the tube is great in a way but it makes lazy …
the new album of mr. bungle arrived. i need this now. it's medicine.
Mr. Bungle "Raping Your Mind" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3U5ZKKxqUzY&feature=emb_logo[/url)
yeah! but here is a small but..;-) this is more of a thrash-metal album than what you'd expect by mr. bungle. i love it, with dave lombardo ond drums and with scott ian, guitarist of anthrax. i would say it delivers;-)Well, as an avid metal-head I totally don't mind :D Checked it from Youtube, brilliant stuff and absolutely loved the video for "Raping Your Mind"! Have to order it soon... :)
It was my other all-time-favourite band that actually finally made me to buy new headphones (my old headphones broke down loooong time ago :'( ). One day I woke up, devil knows why, at five o'clock in the morning, with this terrifyingly strong urge to listen to music... it was a very bitter moment to realize that in block of flats, I cannot put Meshuggah from stereos in loud volume at five o'clock in the morning ;D So later that day I went and bought new headphones.
Listening to Meshuggah from headphones in ear-splitting volume right now, just listened to this song called "The Hurt That Finds You First"... Wanted to share, as it has this amazing, slow ending that every time, without a fail, gives me chills... When the bass and drums suddenly stop... and when the bass and drums come back... Instant goose bumps!

Music is such an amazing thing, and I love all those moments when you feel it to the fullest.... :)
Ah, almost forgot to add this drum playthroughm with Tomas Haake... It's orgastic to watch while meditating with the music.... :)

Oh, Carter are one of my top ten bands ever! Brilliant lyrics and amazing live! Did you catch any of their handful of reunion gigs a few years ago? I went to a few and, no joke, actually ran into Justin outside one in Leeds, no idea if he actually went into the show... anyone remember if he ever said he was a Carter fan? ???
No mate. Didnt make the gigs. Really really clever lyrics I think and very poppy songs. Great band.A selection of Carter USM tracks :)

Hey, you lot, do me a favour? My friends Steph's band The Dying Lights (I've mentioned them before and the last video I posted got a couple of good reactions!) have a new tune out on Youtube, 'Crash'. They're an unsigned band, making original music and making videos with ****-all financial backing just because they love doing it. I think they're rather good and worthy of attention so would you mind giving it a watch (or two!) and possibly leave a 'like', comment or even a share? Won't cost you anything and I think we all need to support original music especially in these days when they can't even make a quid or two from live performances?

Absolutely bloody love The Cure. I had a big long checklist of 'bands I love and must see live one day...' and The Cure are the only one left un-ticked. One day, eh? :-[
''Just Another Diamond Day'' Vashti Bunyan.........very much an album of its time i know...but i love it 8)..
Over the last few weeks I seem to be alternating between old albums by Garbage, Placebo, Manic Street Preachers and Suede... damn, I miss the 90's! ;D

Listening and watching… Meshuggah’s Ophidian Trek -live. Exploiting the great speakers and the time alone at work ;) This live is amazing, what a beautiful atmosphere… Besides goosebumps and constant eargasming I, literally, found myself drooling while listening to this… Like, wth? The human body truly is a mystery ;D

That's a real mind-blower live recording-show-performance-video...i have that on blu ray..
I wouldn't say that it makes me drool but my head begins to make moves on its own ;-) I wonder what would happen if i start drooling while headbanging...becoming a superspreader...ha, ha.. ;D
Anyone else got any fond memories of the grunge scene?

This was really great! I don't know why i have missed that one for so long. I only have The colour of Spring and Laughing Stock in my collection and the Laughing Stock was always one of my favourite pop-albums ever. Laughing Stock is sooo intense and great. But Spirit of Eden is also just like that one. Marvellous!
Now i'm still waiting for my Mark Hollis album, i ordered both together and i'm looking forward to that.
The Sound's "New Dark Age" - eerily prescient for a song written 40 years ago... :(
''Crooked Tree'' new Molly Tuttle album finally arrived...........
it is the album she was always destined to make (imho)..her most Country/Nashville record to date
Are there any (non NMA albums) you have re-discovered recently?
Hi, i only own a few reissues namely ''In The Land Of Grey And Pink'' 40th. Anniv. issue by Caravan plus 50th. issues of ''American Beauty'' and ''Working Mans Dead'' by Grateful Dead....i will not be buying Harvest for as much as i love the album (ducks for cover) it is not my favourite Neil album....yes it is a classic but my (somewhat unusual) choices to many ,are in no part order....''Zuma'', ''On The Beach'', ''American Stars And Bars'', ''Tonight's The Night'', ''Time Fades Away''..plus i prefer ''After The Goldrush'' to ''Harvest'', but each to their own... it would be a pretty dull world if we all didn't have different tastes/opinions on things.. 8)..
Mountain song - J.A.
Thanks T, have ordered their LP.
Cheers
